Katz Honored as Mentor

Think globally, act locally and, above all, listen, is the advice to future mentors offered by a newly honored Saint Louis University expert. Dr. Jerome Katz, the Mary Louise Murray Professor of Management, received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Academy of Management's entrepreneurship division at its annual meeting in Toronto.

The award honors faculty members who have done an exceptional job in preparing new faculty for the field of entrepreneurship. The award is unusual in that it is not given annually, but only when someone deserving is nominated.

The award came to Katz through the efforts of SLU doctoral students, who gathered letters from current and former students at SLU and at Katz's former school, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Because of Katz's involvement with national new faculty workshops, participants in those programs also contributed letters. Those letters praised his mentoring skills and teaching ability. Students wrote that Katz "gave me confidence in my own critical thinking and writing abilities," and that "most students come to him after learning of his dedication, rigor and support."

Before this award, SLU's Graduate Student Association honored Katz in 1999 with its Graduate Mentor Faculty Award, which was based on the nomination of his students.

"It was an honor to receive an award granted by my profession, but it was even more of an honor teaching the SLU students who had nominated me for the award," Katz said.

Katz co-directs the University's nationally recognized entrepreneurship program, runs SLU's internationally recognized entrepreneurship education World Wide Web site (www.slu.edu/eweb), and is part of the team creating the University's new e-commerce major for MBA students.

In 1995, Inc. Magazine identified Katz as one of the top 16 small business researchers in the world. He recently was elected to as one of the academy's nine governors. The Academy of Management is an 11,000-member international organization for the management profession.
