Dowdy to Retire
as A&S Dean Next June

After six years as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Shirley Dowdy has announced her intention to retire next year. University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ, and Provost Sandra Johnson have accepted her resignation as dean effective June 30, 2001. Johnson said a search process will begin this fall.

"This was a very difficult decision to make, especially because of all the wonderful experiences I've had working with the faculty and staff at Saint Louis University," Dowdy, 66, said. "I have decided to retire because I want to spend more time with my family, my church and my many creative pursuits."

The College of Arts and Sciences is SLU's largest school, with 15 departments and 12 centers and programs. Under her guidance, the college has taken great strides, including the addition of several new academic programs, improved facilities and a new governance structure.

"Saint Louis University is better today because of Shirley's leadership as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences," Johnson said. "She has been instrumental in the development of many academic initiatives that have enhanced the educational experiences of our students."

Dowdy also has a strong belief in the college living out the University's mission to prepare students to become men and women for others. For example, she played a key role in the creation of Micah House, a faith-based service program, that has gained national praise.

In addition, Dowdy has had a major impact on University governance as a member of the President's Coordinating Council. She also helped forge Project SLU2000, the University's $100 million initiative focusing on continued academic excellence and an enhanced campus environment and infrastructure.

Dowdy said she is proud that the College of Arts and Sciences has created, over the last six years, an identity associated with excellence in teaching and advances in research.

"There will be a lot of things I will miss about being dean," she said. "Most of all, I will miss the people."
