Hrubetz Is Interim Dean of AHP

Dr. Joan Hrubetz has been a nursing educator and administrator at Saint Louis University since 1975.

But last month she agreed to take on a new job as interim dean of the School of Allied Health Professions while continuing to serve as dean of the School of Nursing.

After a month on the job as interim dean, Hrubetz said that things are progressing smoothly.

"While I have a lot to learn about the seven disciplines that make up the School of Allied Health Professions, so far everybody has been so cooperative and hospitable that I feel we are already on the right track," she said.

Hrubetz identified four major goals she has for the school.

"My first goal is to identify a specific direction for the school so that when a search committee for the new dean is appointed, it will be easier to determine the suitability of candidates for the job."

The School of Allied Health Professions consists of the departments of nutrition and dietetics, health information management, clinical laboratory science, nuclear medicine technology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and physician assistant education. Hrubetz said her second goal is to identify the commonalities among the seven departments and work toward greater collaboration in those areas.

A third goal, she said, is to assist in raising more scholarship funds. A fourth goal is to set a specific research agenda for the school.

"If we can get all those goals accomplished, I will be very happy," she said.

Hrubetz said that she agreed to take on the job as a way that she could give back to Saint Louis University for all the opportunities the University has given her.

"It is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading such a fine school, with a dedicated and competent faculty and staff and such bright and enthusiastic students," she said.

Hrubetz also enumerated another important goal.

"While we have a great amount of work to do, another of my lesser, but no less important, goals is to make sure we have fun while we are doing the work," she said.

In a related move, Laura Stuetzer, associate professor of physician assistant education, has agreed to take a leadership role at the School of Allied Health Professions in a new role as director of planning.
