Campus Ministry Serves Today's Issues and Soup
|
A full menu of Christian responses to some of today's most perplexing social issues make up this semester's Soup with Substance.
The fall program opens on Thursday, Oct. 5, when Mary Ann McGivern, SL, wrestles with "Election Day Dilemmas for Practicing Christians." McGivern, a Catholic Worker community member and longtime social justice activist in St. Louis, will consider to what extent faith and morals can inform choices on Election Day.
On Thursday, Nov. 9, Fr. Ken Brown will look at one way of "Bringing Faith Home to the City." Brown is pastor of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish in the Shaw Neighborhood. He will discuss the homesteading program, which provides financial incentives for Catholics to make their homes in the city, help stabilize neighborhoods and keep city parishes vital.
The semester's offerings will close on Thursday, Dec. 7, with "Meeting Students' Needs in the Middle." SLU alumnus Tom Nolan, director of Loyola Academy in midtown St. Louis, will look at the innovative, Jesuit-sponsored Nativity School movement in education aimed at meeting the needs of low-income, middle-school students.
All sessions begin at noon and are held in the Argentum Room of Busch Center. All faculty, staff and students are welcome. For more information, call 977-2428.
