EXEMPLARY TEACHING: The School for Professional Studies and the Center for Teaching Excellence will sponsor a campus-wide faculty development event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, in Busch Memorial Center's Argentum Room. Dr. Joseph Lowman, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present "Exemplary College Teaching and Student Learning." He will address the essential qualities of college teaching at its best and discuss how excellent teaching affects how much students learn. He is the author of the award-winning book, Mastering the Techniques of Teaching. This event to open to all faculty, graduate teaching assistants and anyone interested in effective teaching. Refreshments will be served.
NOMINATIONS SOUGHT: The Women's Commission will sponsor nine women at the YWCA luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 6. This annual event recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of women in the St. Louis workplace. Members of the University community are invited to nominate an individual from your department/division for this honor. Nominees should exhibit a high level of achievement, demonstrate significant professional growth and leadership, and produce valuable contributions through skills or efforts to SLU and the community. Nominations should be sent to Julie Wiedemann, awards chair, at wiedemja@slu.edu or to the department of forensic pathology, R512, Health Sciences Center.
CORE SURVEY: The academic affairs committee of the Saint Louis University Faculty Senate is conducting a World Wide Web-based survey on faculty attitudes toward core curricula at Saint Louis University. The results of the survey are not binding, but they will permit future discussions of core curricula at SLU to move forward with the knowledge of what significant segments of the faculty want. All full-time faculty of Saint Louis University are eligible to participate in the survey. Each full-time faculty member will receive an e-mail message with a code number to participate in the survey. Answers must be received by Sept. 30 and are confidential. Aggregate results and anonymous comments will be made public after Sept. 30 on the Faculty Senate web site. The committee also has collected relevant documents and prepared a summary of important issues involved in debates about core curricula. MAN OF DESTINY: The Saint Louis University Archives presents an exhibit, "Man of Destiny: Peter J. Verhaegen, SJ," honoring the bicentennial of the birth of Saint Louis University's first president. The exhibit is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in Pius XII Memorial Library, Room 307. It runs through the middle of November and is free and open to the public. HONORARY DEGREES: The University's recognition committee will meet in September to begin to identify candidates to receive honorary degrees at the 2001 commencement ceremony. The recognition committee, whose membership includes representatives from the Faculty Senate, SGA and the Staff Advisory Committee, is responsible for recommending candidates for honorary degrees to the board of trustees. The committee seeks the assistance of the University community in identifying individuals for this recognition. THEATRE SEASON: Saint Louis University Theatre has announced its 2000-2001 season of plays. The year will begin with Pretty Fire, an adaptation of African-American playwright Charlayne Woodard's critically acclaimed one-woman show. It tells the story of five experiences of a girl from birth to young womanhood. The dates for Pretty Fire are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 29 and 30, and Oct. 6 and 7; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1. The second production will be Mr. Puntila and His Man Matti by Bertolt Brecht. Written in 1940 during Brecht's brief exile in Finland, Mr. Puntila is one of his greatest creations Ñ to be ranked as a character alongside Galileo and Mother Courage. It will play at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 10 and 11, and 17 and 18; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12. The third production will be the musical Little Shop of Horrors. It features the tale of a down-and-out floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving. The dates are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 23 and 24, and March 2 and 3, as well as at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, and at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 1. The final production of the season will be Original Rags, the Scott Joplin story told in song and dance. Playwright Michael Dinwiddie will be in residence at Saint Louis University during the rehearsals of this production to workshop his play with the actors for a Midwest premiere. Original Rags will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, April 20 and 21, and 27 and 28; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22. Season tickets now are on sale. COUNSELING SERVICES: The student health and counseling service offers confidential personal counseling for all undergraduate, graduate and professional students. The licensed professional counseling staff can help students adjust to college and with other personal issues. The office is located in Marchetti Towers East (ground floor), and counselors are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day for emergencies. SLU CHOIR: The Saint Louis University Chorale and Community Choir will perform Handel's Messiah at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, in St. Francis Xavier College Church. Directed by Jeral B. Becker, this newly developed joint-choir is open to the public. Singers interested in participating must be capable of the vocal demands found in this oratorio. Selections will include many of the most beloved choruses, including the "Hallelujah Chorus." Rehearsals are 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings (and began on Sept. 5) in the choral rehearsal room, Xavier Hall 348.
DPS MEETINGS: The department of public safety has scheduled "Town Hall Meetings" for the fall. The Health Sciences Center meeting will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the auditorium of the Learning Resources Center. The Frost campus Town Hall Meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 in the Busch Memorial Center Commons area. DPS administrators and officers will be on hand to discuss security, safety and parking issues.
SUMMER STIPENDS: The Ethics Across the Curriculum Program has announced this year's winners of the program's Summer Stipend Award. Awards are available for research activities, course and curriculum development, and/or faculty development that provide for the integration of ethics and the applicant's discipline. Stipends of $2,500 were awarded July 10 for three projects. Dr. Peggy Bowers and Liese Hutchison, (communication) will develop a new graduate-level course in public relations ethics that will be offered next summer. Dr. Sherry C. Lindquist (fine and performing arts) will redevelop the syllabus for "Approaching the Arts" to substantially address relevant ethical issues. The redeveloped course is being offered this fall. Dr. Tina M. Timm (social service) will develop new methods for the teaching of ethics in social work and incorporate them into courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
SCHOLAR ATHLETES: Conference USA has named Saint Louis University as its recipient of the Institutional Excellence Award for the fifth-consecutive year. The award is given to the school with the highest grade point average (GPA) during the current academic year for all student-athletes in conference-sponsored sports. Saint Louis University posted a 3.09 GPA for all student-athletes. "As a department, we are excited to continue our success in academics," senior associate director of athletics Lori Flanagan said. "It has become a competitive issue within our department to stay at the top of our league in this category. By earning the award again this year, it is evident that we put academics at the forefront of our athletics program." The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the current academic year. The Billikens won the award in baseball (2.94) and men's soccer (2.99).
SALE CANCELED: The Samuel Cupples House annual antique sale will not be held as scheduled for this month. To make the sale bigger and to feature more selective merchandise, the sale now will be held every two years. The next sale will be in September 2001.
SCHOLARS' RECEPTION: The third annual reception to recognize and honor the scholarly achievements of SLU's faculty will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Simon Recreation Center. Each department will be designated one or more tables to display publications or other scholarly works. Students will be encouraged to attend. Displays will showcase scholarly works that include books, book chapters, conference proceedings, journal articles, other printed scholarly materials and non-printed materials such as copyrighted software, films, videotapes, art shows, etc. The event will be publicized throughout the University.
GRANT WORKSHOP: The office of research services is offering a workshop about post-award procedures from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Learning Resource Center at the Health Sciences Center. Representatives from both the offices of research services and sponsored programs will help determine "how to" when it comes to grant administration. Register at least one week prior to the workshop date by calling 977-2241.
