Dr. Csaba Galambos (pathology) presented a paper, "Electron Microscopy (EM) Demonstrates the Contribution of VEGF Isoforms 164 and 168 to Lung Vessel Development" at the UltraPath X meeting in Florence, Italy, sponsored by the Society for Ultra-structural Pathology and the University of Florence. Galambos won the award for best presentation.

From the department of physical therapy: the following papers were presented at the American Physical Therapy Association's annual conference in June: Drs. Irma Ruebling and Randy Richter presented "Enhancing the Meaningfulness and Validity of Graduate Outcome Surveys." Dr. Darina Sargeant presented "Perceptions of Clinical Instructors Toward the Clinical Performance Instrument." Dr. Elaine Wilder presented "The Childbearing Year - Anatomical and Physiological Considerations."

Drs. Stephen Wernet (social service), Timothy Delicath (enrollment and academic research) and Ralph Olliges (information technology services) published an article, "Post-course Evaluations of WebCT (Web Course Tools) Classes by Social Work Students" in Research in Social Work Practice. Werner, Delicath and Olliges also presented "What Works, What Doesn't: Modeling Instructional Tools to Enhance Student Satisfaction with Web-Based Instruction" at the WebCT 2000 Conference in Athens, Ga. Olliges and Bernard Pegis presented a paper, "Overcoming Barriers to Implementing WebCT Quizzes."

From Pius XII Memorial Library: Dr. Ron Crown published "Comparing the Patrologia Latina and CETEDOC Library of Christian Latin Texts Databases from a User's Perspective" in the Journal of Religious & Theological Information. Chester Bunnell attended the American Libraries Association annual convention in Chicago. He received the Isadore Gilbert Mudge-R.R. Bowker Award for distinguished contributions to reference librarianship.

Michael Railey, M.D. (community and family medicine) was a speaker at the Illinois Police D.A.R.E. conference in Collinsville, Ill. The topics presented were "Parenting in the Year 2000" and "Spirituality."

Walter Ong, SJ (University professor emeritus) received the Walter Benjamin Award for Outstanding Article in the Field of Media Ecology. The award recognizes Ong's article, "Digitization Ancient and Modern: Beginnings of Writing and Today's Computers" that appeared in Communications Research Trends.

From the department of aerospace engineering: Dr. Marty Ferman presented a paper, "Parks College Engineers Support Design of Our Lady of the Snows-National Shrine at Belleville, IL" at the NASEE meeting in St. Louis. Dr. Richard Andres co-authored the paper. Ferman also attended the Seventh International Conference on Recent Advances in Structural Dynamics in Southampton, England. He published an article, "An Experimental Investigation of Tangential Blowing to Reduce Buffet Response of the Vertical Tails of an F-15 Wind Tunnel Model" and co-wrote an article, "Development of a Transient Signal Analysis Method for Flutter Testing." Dr. David Manor was co-author of a paper, "Numerical Simulation of F-18A/ B/C/D Limit Cycle Oscillations and an Active Oscillation Controller" presented at the 7th International Conference on Recent Advances in Structural Dynamics held in Southampton, England. Dr. Mir Atiqullah presented a paper, "First Course on Manufacturing: Lab or Project?" at the ASEE conference in St. Louis. Aaron Cowin presented an invited seminar on "Adhesive Bonded Composite Joints" at the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Robert Bolla (biology) presented two articles, "Trafficking of Carbon Based Probes Across the Eggshell Heterodera Glycines: A Molecular Interstate" and "Cracking the Egg: Targeting Genes Responsible for the Development of Heterodera Glycines" with graduate students, Jason Low and Beth Burgwyn, respectively, at the 38th annual meeting of the Society of Nematologists held in Quebec, Canada. Bolla also was elected president of the society at this meeting.

From the department of physician assistant education: Dr. Richard Muma presented the "Top 10 Medical Stories of the Century" at the 28th annual AAPA conference in Chicago. Muma also co-authored "The Growing Presence of Complementary and Alternative Medicine" and "Examining Referral Practices of Primary Care Physician Assistants." Dr. Laura Stuetzer presented "Mentoring Your Successors" at the AAPA executive leadership program in Seattle. She also serves as feature editor for Perspectives on Physician Assistant Education. Dr. Pamela Van Bevern published an article, "Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome" in Clinician Reviews.

From the department of earth and atmospheric sciences: Dr. John Encarnacion gave a seminar, "The Origins of Palawan" at the University of the Philppines. He, along with graduate student Dan Fernandez and an undergraduate student, spent three weeks in the Philippines mapping and sampling on the island of Palawan. Dr. Robert Herrmann visited Korea and Taiwan during a 14-day trip in July. In Korea, he discussed establishing a multi-year cooperative research program on the seismic structure of the Korean peninsula with Dr. Kihwa Lee of Seoul National University. He participated in a discussion on the use of seismic network data from rapid hazard assessment with seismologists of the Korean Meteorological Administration and lectured on high frequency ground motion before the Korean Institute of Geology. In Taiwan, he participated in a two-day field trip of the September 1999 Taiwan earthquake and observed earthquake damage and success in reconstruction.

Dr. James Korn (psychology) attended the American Psychological Association convention in Washington, D.C. Korn participated on a panel, "Improving Department Quality" and co-presented a poster on "Faculty and Student Perceptions of Chapter Coverage in Introductory Psychology."

Jonathan Burdick (SLUCare) attended BIOCOMM 2000, the annual meeting of the BioCommuni-cations Association that was held in partnership with the meeting of the Association of Medical Illustrators at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Burdick taught workshops on beginning and advanced web design.

From the department of occupational therapy: Cindy Kempf presented a paper, "Identification of Patients in a Long-Term Care Setting," at the Rehab Care Group Leadership Conference in Atlanta. She also was re-elected president of the Missouri Occupational Therapy Associa-tion to serve for a second term. Claudia Hilton was elected director of membership of the Missouri Occupational Therapy Association. Dr. Shirley Behr was invited to speak at the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging's 25th annual conference and exhibition held in Cleveland. She co-presented a session that provided an in-depth look at the Community Partnership Model, an interactive and collaborative partnership developed between the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging and the department of occupational therapy.

From the School of Nursing: Dr. Patsy Ruchala presented "Development and Implemen-tation of a Systematic Outcomes Assessment Plan" at the 11th Annual Nurse Educators Conference in the Rockies held in Breckenridge, Colo. She also has been appointed the awards committee chair for Region 2 of Sigma Theta Tau International honor society of nursing. Dr. Mary Ann Lavin (left) is president-elect for the North Atlantic Nursing Diagnosis Associa-tion (NANDA). Anne Perry serves on the board of directors of NANDA.

Frederick McLeod, SJ (theological studies) received the College Theology Society 2000 Book Award at the group's annual convention. He also delivered a paper, "The Christological Ramifications of Theodore of Mopsuestia's Understanding of Baptism and the Eucharist" at the convention. His article, "Theodore of Mopsuestia Revisited" was published in the September issue of Theological Studies.

Dr. Donald Critchlow (history) delivered a lecture, "Federal Family Planning After 30 Years," at the University of Virginia and presented a paper, "Creating the Second Welfare State: Public and Private Interests," at the annual conference of Policy Analysis and Management in Washington.

Dr. N.K. Kwak (decision sciences and MIS) presented a paper, "An Integrated Mathematical Programming Model for Resource Allocation in a University-affiliated Health Care System" at the joint international meeting of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences in Seoul, Korea. He also presented a paper, "Classifying and Predict-ing the Symptomatic Status of HIV/ AIDS Patients: A Comparison of Linear Program-ming Discriminant Analysis and Artificial Neural Network" at the Korean Operations Research and Management Sciences Society in June.

Dr. Lyn S. Amine (marketing) has completed a one-year sabbatical during which she visited Morocco as a senior Fulbright Scholar at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane. She co-authored a paper, "Doing Business in Morocco" that will be published in Thunderbird International Business Review.

From the department of educational studies: Dr. Paul Shore was a visiting scholar at the University of Wroclaw, Poland, during the summer. He also was elected a member of the International Association of Hungarian Studies. Dr. Ted D.R. Green was a consultant and peer facilitator to a group of urban Virginia teachers who attended the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in July. He also wrote history curriculum with a group of national consultants for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
