The department of internal medicine has appointed D. Douglas Miller, M.D., as its chairman.
Miller will provide overall leadership for the 13 divisions that comprise internal medicine: allergy and immunology, bone marrow transplantation, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and hepatology, general internal medicine, geriatric medicine, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, nuclear medicine, pulmonology and rheumatology.
Miller, a cardiologist, had been functioning as acting chair of the department since May.
"I have every confidence that he will lead the department with great vigor, managing the rapid changes that are occurring in health care today and implementing many exciting new initiatives that are in progress for the department," said Patricia L. Monteleone, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine.
"I am pleased and honored to have the opportunity to serve Saint Louis University and its world-renowned School of Medicine as the chairman of internal medicine," Miller said. "Our department is nationally ranked this year in eight specialties by U.S. News & World Report. As leaders in health care, internal medicine faculty work closely with their SLUCare colleagues to serve the St. Louis community and surrounding area."
Research in the department, funded by the National Institutes of Health, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other prominent organizations, has led to medical breakthroughs in vaccine development, hepatitis treatment, cardiac care, aging and many other disciplines. Miller said the department's extensive educational programs prepare more than 150 talented young doctors and students each year for challenging careers in modern medicine and biomedical research.
"The department of internal medicine is committed to these missions and to strengthening its local and regional health care partnerships," Miller said. "It's truly exciting to be given the chance to lead an outstanding organization at a fine university in a great city like St. Louis."
Miller received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, served an internship in medicine at the University of Western Ontario in Canada and completed his residency in medicine at McGill University. He did fellowships in cardiology research at the Montreal Heart Institute, in clinical cardiology at Emory University in Atlanta and in nuclear cardiology at the Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital program in Boston. Last year he completed an executive MBA at SLU, and he holds an executive management certificate from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Miller held a faculty appointment at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio from 1986 to 1991, and he came to Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1991.
He has held several positions in national organizations and has served on many scientific review committees and editorial boards. Miller is the author of numerous manuscripts and textbook contributions.
