Ray recognized for contributions

Pediatrician honored for outstanding
achievements in public health


Charles George Ray, M.D., was honored for his significant contributions and outstanding local leadership in public health with the 2000 Local Excellence in Public Health Award given by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

Ray is chairman of the department of pediatrics at the School of Medicine and pediatrician-in-chief at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.

"Dr. Ray's efforts and partnerships with the Missouri Department of Public Health demonstrate his extraordinary commitment to public health," said ASTHO executive director George E. Hardy Jr., M.D. "On behalf of ASTHO, I offer my sincere congratulations."

Ray has been chairman of the department of pediatrics since 1993. He came to St. Louis from Seattle, where he was director of the clinical virology and microbiology laboratories and acting director of the program in infectious diseases at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Ray served as chief of infectious disease divisions in the departments of pediatrics at the University of Arizona and the University of Washington. He was also chief-of-staff at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., after beginning his career in the area of public health as an epidemic intelligence service officer in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1964 to 1966.

Ray earned his medical degree in 1960 from the University of Chicago School of Medicine.

Ray has been involved in numerous societies and foundations and has written more than 200 journal articles and book chapters and co-written several books, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Infections in Children and Medical Microbiology: An Introduction to Infectious Diseases.

His research interests include rapid diagnostic methods in clinical virology, pathogenesis, the treatment and epidemiology of viral diseases and the investigation of basic mechanisms of viral-host interactions.
