Dr. Lyn S. Amine (marketing) attended the first annual Conference on Global E-Commerce in Santa Cruz, Calif., jointly sponsored by Arthur Andersen Co., UCLA and the Univer-sity of Washing-ton. Amine also attended a seminar on "Business Opportunities in India" organized by the Center for International Studies at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and the World Affairs Council of St. Louis.
Dr. Reinhard Andress (modern and classical languages) presented "Albert Vigoleis Thelens Die Insel des Zweiten Gesichts Ð Groteske und Witzige Satiren auf das Dritte Reich" at a symposium on German exile students held at the University of Kansas.
Dr. Olga Arbelaez (modern and classical languages) wrote "Apuntes Para el Estudio de la Narrativa de Hector Rojas Herazo" for the first volume of a collection of essays titled, Literatura y Cultura: Narrativa Columbiana del Siglo XX. Arbelaez also presented "Bayboom en el Paraiso o el Poder Subversivo de la Risa" at the Latin American Theater Conference held at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Dr. Mir Atiqullah (aerospace/mechanical engineering) attended the NPACI Parallel Processing Institute Aug. 28 to 30 at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
Michael Barber, SJ(philosophy) co-authored "Theory and Alterity: Dussel's Marz and Marion on Idolatry" in Thinking from the Underside of History: Enrique Dussel's Philosophy of Liberation.
Dr. Richard D. Breslin (educational leadership and higher education) wrote an opinion piece, "Lessons from the Trenches," accepted for publication in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Breslin also had an article accepted for publication, "Hiring to maintain Mission" that will appear in Catholic Education: Journal of Inquiry and Practice.
Chester Bunnell (Pius XII Memorial Library) has been appointed chair of the committee for the Isadore Gilbert-R.R. Bowker Award for distinguished contributions to reference librarianship.
Dr. Harold Bush Jr. (English) wrote "Remembering the Bomb: Hiroshima, Enola Gay, and the Culture Wars" for Mars Hill Review.
Dr. John Carroll (histrory) presented "The Great Emporium of the East? The Limits of Colonialism in Early Hong Kong" at the workshop on the Internationalization of China, organized by the Harvard University Asia Center in Cambridge, Mass.
Dr. Ellen Carnaghan (political science) wrote "Thinking About Democracy: Interviews with Russian Citizens" for Slavic Review.
Dr. William Charron (philosophy) wrote "Greeks and Games: Forerunners of Modern Game Theory" for Forum for Social Economics.
Dr. Eddie Clark (psychology), Dr. Matthew Kreuter (public health), Dr. Darcell Scharff (public health) and Cheryl Holt,a graduate student in psychology, published "Does Locus of Control Moderate the Effects of Tailored Health Education Materials?" in Health Education Research: Theory & Practice. Clark, along with graduate student Debra Oswald and undergraduate student Johanna Dunn, co-authored a paper, "Friendship Maintenance Behaviors: Do They Depend on Social and Problem Solving Skills?" presented at the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference in Chicago.
Dr. David Crossley(Earth and atmospheric sciences) attended the 14th International Symposium on Earth Tides, held in Mizusawa, Japan. This symposium, held every four years, brings together about 150 scientists studying subjects such as solid Earth tides, ocean tide loading, atmospheric pressure effects on gravity and topics on rotation of the Earth. Crossley convened a session, the largest at the conference, on superconducting gravimeters and also chaired a meeting of the Global Geodynamics Project, held in connection with the conference.
Dr. Joachim Dorsch (Earth and atmospheric sciences) attended the 31st International Geological Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he presented a paper in the session, "Influence of Tectonics on Stratigraphic Sequences."
Dr. John Doyle (philosophy) wrote an article called, "Suarez on the Truth of the Proposition, 'This is my Body' " for the Modern Schoolman.
Dr. Retha M. Edens (educational studies) spoke on evolution as part of the current topic series at the United Methodist Church in Belleville, Ill. The four-part series focused on creationism and evolution.
Dr. Marty Allen Ferman (aerospace/mechanical engineering) and three students published a paper entitled, "An Investigation of Secondary Flow Injection To Alter Vortex Impingement on Vertical Tails of a Fighter Aircraft using a Water Tunnel" at the EAA Forum at AirVenture 2000 in Oshkosh, Wis. Ferman also was one of the four organizers of the seventh International Conference on Recent Advances in Structural Dynamics, held in Southampton, England. He also served as one of the four editors of the two volume proceedings of the conference.
Dr. James T. Fisher (theological studies and history) has written a textbook, Catholics in America. He also contributed a book chapter, "A World Made Safe for Diversity: The Vietnam Lobby and the Politics of Pluralism," in Cold War Constructions: The Political Culture of United States Imperialism, 1945-1966.
Janice Fronczak (fine and performing arts) had three of her original monologues selected to be included in The Best Men's Stage Monologues of 1999 by Smith & Kraus Publishers.
Dr. Phillip Gavitt (history) presented "Gender, Pedagogy and Ritual in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Tuscan Charity" at the Renaissance Society of America Florence 2000 Confer-ence in Florence, Italy. Gavitt also received a National Endow-ment for the Humanities summer stipend for his project to produce a critical edition and translation of "Memories of Florence: The Memorie Fiorentine of Francesco Settimanni (1681-1763) and the Twilight of the Medici."
Dr. Charles E. Graves(Earth and atmospheric sciences) presented a seminar, "Validation of Model Precipitation: Analysis of Scale Differences" at the University of Illinois.
Claudia A. Hilton(occupational therapy) was elected director of membership of the Missouri Occupational Therapy Association to serve from July 2000 to June 2002.
Dr. Dorothy James (nursing) has been selected to represent as this year's recipient of the Emerson Electric Company's Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dr. Georgia Johnstonppeared in West Virginia University Philological Papers. Johnston also presented her paper "Woolf and Bestiality" on a featured panel at the tenth annual Virginia Woolf Conference.
Dr. Claudine Jomphe (modern and classical languages) has written a book, Theories de la Disposition et le Grand Oeuvre de Ronsard, and an article on a French Renaissance ars poetica in the Nouvelle Revue du Seizieme Siecle.
Dr. Valerie Karras(theological studies) chaired a panel on "Culture and Identity: Issues in Gregory Nazianzus" at the annual meeting of the North American Patristic Society, held at Loyola University in Chicago. Karras also presented a paper, "An Eastern Christian Response to Sulak Sivaraksa's 'Economic Aspects of Social and Environmental Violence' " at the sixth International Conference of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies, held Aug. 5 to 12 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.
Cindy Kempf (occupational therapy) was re-elected president of the Missouri Occupational Therapy Association to serve for a second term from July 2000 to June 2002. She also presented a paper, "Identification of Patients in a Long-Term Care Setting" at the Rehab Care Group Leadership Conference in Atlanta.
Dr. Bruce Kowert (chemistry) published a paper, "Diffusion of Dioxygen in Alkanes and Cycloalkanes" for the Journal of Physical Chemistry. His co-authors are undergraduate Kurt Sobush, former graduate student Nhan Dang and former undergraduates Joshua Reed and Louis Seele.
Dr. Tim Kusky (earth and atmospheric sciences) gave two lectures at Peking University in Beijing, "Precambrian Tectonics" and "Tectonics of the Southern Alaskan Convergent Margin-Implications for Crustal Growth." The lectures were attended by faculty and staff from Peking University and a group of scientists from the Chinese National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Donna LaVoie (psychology) and Kelly Faulkner, a graduate student in psychology, co-authored a paper, "Age Differences in False Recognition Using a Forced Choice Paradigm." LaVoie also co-authored a book chapter, "Dual-Process Theories of Memory in Old Age" in Models of Cognitive Aging.
Dr. Reuven R. Levary(decision sciences and MIS) represented the International Federation of Operational Research Societies at the United Nations 53rd annual DPI/NGO Conference.
Dr. Donald Linhorst(social service) has co-authored an article, "Factors Associated with the Discharge of Patients from a Long-Term State Psychiatric Hospital" for Social Work Research.
Dr. Tim Lomperis (political science) presented "International Relations Theory and the Wreckage of Kosovo" at the meetings of the American Political Science Association in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Ronald Modras (theological studies) presented "Addressing the Demonic in Sacred Texts: The Next Step in Christian Jewish Relations" at a holocaust conference held at Oxford University. Macmillan Press has selected the paper for publication in its volume of conference proceedings.
Dr. Oscar Lopez (modern and classical languages) lectured on "Alvaro Mutis y la Novela Posmoderna" in the "Maestria en Literatura Colombiana" at the Universidad de Antioquia (Medellin-Columbia). Lopez also presented "Indagando en las Pesquisas Literarias de Mempo Giardinelli" at the annual Conference of Romance Languages and Literature at the University of Cincinnati. Lopez also published the article "Amirbar: o de las Razones Historicas del Desencanto" in Revista de Estudios de Literatura Colombiana.
Dr. Dorothy Miles (educational studies) had an article, "Multicultural Portfoloios" accepted for publication in Multicultural Perspectives.
Dr. Bellur Nagabhushan (aerospace and mechanical engineering) presented a paper co-authored by Saeid Janani, a Parks College graduate, titled, "Sequential Dispensing Concepts for Impact Pattern Control" at the 22nd Congress of the International Council of Aeronautical Sciences, held Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 in Harrogate, England.
Dr. Gregory A. Pass (Pius XII Memorial Library) presented a full-day workshop, "MARC cataloging of Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and Early-Modern Manuscripts" at the 41st annual Rare Books and Manuscripts Preconference of the Association of College and Research Libraries in Chicago.
Dr. John Pauly and Liese Hutchison (communication) have written "Case Studies and Their Use In Public Relations" for the Handbook of Public Relations. Pauly also wrote "Public Journalism in International Perspective" in Communication Research Trends. Pauly also participated in a panel on "Graduate Education in the 21st Century" and was the discussant for the top faculty and student papers submitted to the Critical and Cultural Studies division at the annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix. Pauly also participated in a panel on "Public Relations: Candidates as Clients" at the annual Whalen Symposium in Media Ethics at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
Dr. Jean-Louis Pautrot (modern and classical languages) wrote "Musical Dimensions of Prose Narratives: Musikant by Andre Hodeir" for Mosaic. Pautrot also co-presented "AATF's Articulation Task Force in St. Louis" at the 73rd annual AATF Congress in Paris.
R. Ronald W. Rebore (educational leadership and higher education) published a new book, The Ethics of Educational Leadership. Rebore also published a book review on Spiritlinking Leadership: Working Through Resistance to Organizational Change in Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice. Rebore also received the faculty mentorship award from the Graduate Student Association in May.
Drs. Doris M. Rubio (research methodology), Marla L. Berg-Weger (social service) and Susan C. Tebb (social service) recently published an article, "The Caregiver Well-Being Scale Revisited" in Health and Social Work. The trio also published a book chapter, "Caregiver Well-Being Scale" in Program Evaluation, third edition. Berg-Weger and Julie Birkenmaier (social service) also have written "Good Habits of Highly Effective Practicum Students" for The New Social Worker.
Dr. Jose Sanchez(history) participated in a symposium on "Pope Pius XII and World War II" at the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Dan Schlafly (history) wrote an article called, "Roman Catholicism in Todays' Russia: The Troubled Heritage" for the Journal of Church and State. The article has been reprinted as a chapter in the bookReligious Liberty in Northern Europe in the Twenty-First Century.
Dr. Tom Shippey (English) published, "Grim World-Play: Wisdom and Folly in Anglo-Saxon Humor" in Humour in Anglo-Saxon Literature; "The Tale of Gamelyn: Class Warfare and the Embarrassments of Genre" in The Spirit of Medieval English Popular Romance; and "The Undeveloped Image: Anglo-Saxon in Popular Consciousness from Turner to Tolkien" in Literary Appropriations of the Anglo-Saxons from the Thirteenth to the Twentieth Century.
Dr. Paul Shore (educational studies) gave a slide lecture, "Transylvanian Twilight: Baroque Treasures of Romania," at the Martin D'Arcy Museum of Art at Loyola University in Chicago.
Dr. Travis T. Threats (communication sciences and disorders) gave an invited presentation to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Steven Vago (sociology) attended and participated in a number of panel discussions and workshops on "The Transformation of Legal Systems in Eastern European Countries" during the summer at Simon Fraser University and the Universities of British Columbia and Western Washington. As part of his continued research, he also interviewed recent arrivals from former Warsaw Pact nations. Vago also has been invited to partake in a series of talks later this year in Canada and Washington on "Legal and Social Changes in the Former Yugoslavia Ð Alternative Scenarios for the Balkans."
Dr. Gregory Wolf (modern and classical languages) was a guest professor at the University of New Mexico's Taos German Summer program. Wolf also wrote an article, "Das Diachrone Verlangen: A Re-evaluation of Botho Strauss' Concept of History in 'Die Wildmung' in the Context of "Anschwellender Bocksgesang' ," in Glossen.
Elizabeth Zeibig (clinical laboratory science) received the Theriot Award for Development of Significant Materials in Media and Equipment at the 68th annual American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science meeting in San Francisco.
