Contact: December 17, 2002 Saint Louis University Cancer Center Offers "Freedom from Smoking" ST. LOUIS - Twenty minutes after you quit smoking, your blood pressure decreases and your pulse rate drops. One day after you break the habit, your chance of heart attack decreases. Five years later, your stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.Saint Louis University Cancer Center offers the opportunity to make some of those healthy changes. Freedom from Smoking, developed by the American Lung Association, has helped thousands of smokers become non-smokers. After an orientation, the seven clinic sessions run for six weeks. Instead of focusing on scare tactics or statistical information, the program offers individuals a step-by-step plan to break the habit of smoking. "Quitting smoking can be such a challenge," said Teresa Dunleavy, RN, OCN, education coordinator at Saint Louis University's Community Cancer Resource Center. "This program is designed to help people take on that challenge and realize the benefits of a more healthy lifestyle." The behavior modification program is available to any patient, family member, staff, student or member of the SLU community. To decide if this program is right for you, attend a free "Thinking about Quitting" orientation session. For orientation dates or more information, call Teresa Dunleavy at (314) 268-7015. The Saint Louis University Community Cancer Resource Center is located on the first floor West Pavilion of Saint Louis University Hospital at 3655 Vista. Freedom from Smoking is just one of the many services provided by the Saint Louis University Cancer Center. The Saint Louis University Cancer Center mission is to provide superior scientific and therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The Cancer Center will realize its mission through excellence in research, education, patient care, community outreach and service. |
