Contact: April 5, 2004 Singapore Ambassador Leads Boeing Institute Event
A global leader will serve as the highlight to an upcoming event by the Saint Louis University Boeing Institute of International Business. Heng Chee Chan, Ambassador of Singapore to the United States, will lead the Distinguished Guest Lecture Series in International Business, which is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in the Anheuser-Busch Auditorium of John and Lucy Cook Hall. Chan will discuss “Singapore in the World Economy: Dealing with Globalization.” Registration begins at 4 p.m. Chan assumed her appointment as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States in July 1996. Prior to that, she was the executive director of the Singapore International Foundation -- which supports a Singapore version of the Peace Corps -- and director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Chan was the founding Director of the Institute of Policy Studies. She served as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1989 to 1991 and was concurrently High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to Mexico. Chan has received a number of awards during her career, including the Public Administration Gold Medal at Singapore’s 34th National Day Awards in 1999. She received the Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and the University of Buckingham (United Kingdom). She also was named the Inaugural International Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women. In 1991 she received the first Singapore Woman of the Year Award. Chan has published numerous articles and books about politics in Singapore, Southeast Asia and international security. She has received the National Book Award for “A Sensation of Independence: A Political Biography of David Marshall” and the National Book Award for “The Dynamics of One Party Dominance: The PAP at the Grassroots.” The Ambassador also has been recognized for her service. She has been a member of the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Singapore National Committee for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, and the International Council of the Asia Society in New York.
