David Satcher To Present Flanagan Lecture

ST. LOUIS -- Former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D. will discuss health disparities as they relate to children at the 29th annual Flanagan Lecture for the Saint Louis University School of Public Health.

Dr. Satcher, now director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, will speak from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 27 in Saint Francis Xavier "College" Church, 3628 Lindell Blvd. A buffet reception will follow immediately in the Lower Level Ballroom of the College Church.

Dr. Satcher was sworn in for a four-year term as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States in February 1998. He also served as assistant secretary for health from February 1998 to January 2001, making him the only second person to have held both positions simultaneously.

During his tenure as surgeon general, Dr. Satcher led the federal government's effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. The initiative became one of the two major goals of Health People 2010, the nation's health agenda for the next 10 years. His goal continues to be making public health work for all groups in this nation.

Dr. Satcher also released surgeon general's reports on tobacco and health; mental health, which was followed by supplements on children's mental health and culture; race and ethnicity; suicide prevention, which was followed by a national strategy to prevent suicide; oral health; sexual health and responsible sexual behavior; youth violence prevention and overweight and obesity.

The Saint Louis University School of Public Health Flanagan Lecture honors the Rev. John J. Flanagan, S.J., a Jesuit leader who founded Saint Louis University's hospital administration program in 1947. Father Flanagan served as founder and director of that degree program for 20 years, which is now the Master of Health Administration program.

The lecture, which is followed by a reception, is open to the public. Parking is available in the University's garage at the corner of Olive and Compton, approximately two blocks east of the Church.

Please contact Danielle Davis at davisd@slu.edu by Friday, March 21 to RSVP. For more information about this year's Flanagan Lecture, call the School of Public Health at 314.977.8255.
