Experts in the News

"Experts in the News" is a monthly summary of media coverage and interviews with University faculty and staff. This report is for the period of August 1 - 31.

UNIVERSITY
The SLU Cancer Center gala was featured Aug. 2 in the Ladue News. Pictured were University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J.; board of trustees member J. Kim Tucci; interim center director, Dr. James Hardin; and members of the organizing committee, including committee chair Patty Peterson.

ADMINISTRATION
University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., was interviewed by The Chronicle of Higher Education for an Aug. 16 article featuring the Water Tower Inn and other universities running hotels. Associate Vice President of Event Services Ed Kidd, Water Tower Inn manager Jeremy Schierhoff and Associate Vice President of Alumni Relations Steve Vincent also were interviewed for the story.

Fr. Biondi held a news conference to announce the hiring of Julius Hunter as vice president of community relations Aug. 14, and his comments were broadcast live on KMOX-AM, with additional coverage on KMOV-TV Channel 4, KSDK-TV Channel 5 and KTVI-TV Channel 2 as well as in the St. Louis Business Journal, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the St. Louis Metro Sentinel and the Suburban Journals. Fr. Biondi also was interviewed by the West End Word for a related story.

Rob Altholz (vice president, business and finance) was interviewed by the St. Louis Business Journal for a front-page story about the purchase of a Pasta House franchise by the University. Fr. Biondi’s photo appeared in the front-page story.

Shawn Swinigan (residence life) was interviewed by the Associated Press about the University’s freshman experience center and a new course, University 101, which prepares students for college life.

Deborah Scheff (student health and counseling services) was interviewed by Catholic News Service about the mental health services provided to students.

ALLIED HEALTH
William Hart, Ph.D. (nutrition and dietetics) was interviewed Aug. 27 by Self Magazine about how sugars work in the body.

Sandy Lehn (occupational therapy) was an in-studio guest Aug. 10 on The Well Journal on KFTK-AM 97.1 regarding repetitive stress injuries. The Well Journal show is syndicated in Washington, D.C., Palm Springs, Fla., Atlanta, Ga. and through a website feed in San Francisco, Calif.

ARTS AND SCIENCES
Robert Krizek, Ph.D. (communication) was interviewed by the CNBC, Chicago Sun Times, San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, Las Vegas Review Journal, Tampa (Fla.) Tribune, Toledo (Ohio) Blade, Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer and KSHP-AM 1400 (Las Vegas) about the effects of a potential baseball strike. He also was mentioned in the Memphis Commercial Appeal on the same topic.

Ken Warren, Ph.D. (political science) was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune about changes in the political climate since 9/11 and the possible impact on campaigns. He also was interviewed by the Christian Science Monitor about seats in the Missouri legislature up for election and the effects of term limits. He also spoke with the Associated Press about Gov. Holden mistakenly signing bills he planned to veto. The story ran in the New York Times, Washington Post and 11 other top-100 newspapers. Warren also was interviewed by the French newspaper Sud Ouest about the state of President Bush’s popularity. Warren also was interviewed by the Associated Press and Kansas City Star about the Carnahan-Talent Senate Race. He also was interviewed by the Arkansas Democrat Gazette about voter attitudes.

Tim Lomperis, Ph.D. (political science) was interviewed Aug. 27 by the Houston Chronicle about the Pentagon and 9/11. He also was interviewed Aug. 27 by Radio Free Asia about corruption in Vietnam and China. Lomperis also was interviewed Aug. 20 by ABC News online about the military taking control of covert actions from the CIA.

Terri Weaver, Ph.D. (psychology) was interviewed by Newsday about the effects of viewing images of the Sept. 11 tragedy in media coverage of the tragedy’s anniversary.

Charles Marske, Ph.D. (sociology and criminal justice) was interviewed by the Denver Post, Arizona Republic, Pittsburgh Gazette, Toledo Blade and Kansas City Star about the effects of Sept. 11 on American society.

Leo Malone, Ph.D. (chemistry) was interviewed by the Associated Press about a chemical spill in Crystal City.

Jean-Robert Leguey-Feilleux, Ph.D. (political science) was interviewed by the Denver Rocky Mountain News about homeland security.

BUSINESS
James Fisher, Ph.D. (business ethics) was interviewed by Money magazine about the risks associated with being a company whistleblower. He was also interviewed by the Charlotte Observer, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Newsday and the Louisville Courier-Journal for stories about business ethics in the wake of the recent corporate scandals.

John McGowan, Ph.D. (accounting) was interviewed by Investment News about the use of tax shelters by large corporations.

Gladys Gruenberg, Ph.D. (management) was interviewed by the international news service Reuters for a story about the working poor on Labor Day. The story was picked up in more than a dozen newspapers around the country and by Forbes.com.

Patrick Welch, Ph.D. (economics) was also interviewed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a story about how skeptical consumers could be a threat to an economic recovery.

MEDICINE
Randall Flanery, M.D. (community and family medicine) was interviewed Aug. 29 by WCTC-AM 1450 (New Jersey) and Aug. 27 by WTMJ-AM 620 (Milwaukee) about kids and families making the transition to college. He also was interviewed Aug. 14 by the Washington Post, offering practical strategies on how kids can make the transition to middle school.

Robert Belshe, M.D. (infectious diseases) was interviewed Aug. 28 by USA Today about a new study on smallpox vaccines and the question of long-term immunity. The story ran in the international edition of the paper.

Banke Angerwall, M.D. (gastroenterology and hepatology) was interviewed for a KSDK-TV Channel 5 Cover Story on endoscopic ultrasound that ran Aug. 21, 23 and 25, at various times during the day.

George Griffing, M.D. (general internal medicine) was interviewed Aug. 23 by Univision Online about ways hormones can stop the aging process.

Thomas Chambers, M.D. (molecular microbiology and immunology) was interviewed Aug. 20 by States News Service (Washington. D.C.) for an article on the history of West Nile virus. The article will run in several Louisiana papers. He also was interviewed on the same subject by the Corpus Christi Times, Advance Magazine and babycenters.com.

John Morley, M.D. (geriatrics) was was quoted in USA Today about his ADAM questionnaire to detect low testosterone. He also was quoted in a number of newspapers nationally about male menopause.

Terry Moore, M.D. (rheumatology) was interviewed Aug. 9 by the American Medical News regarding lupus.

Saint Louis University’s role in performing the first heart transplant in the Midwest was mentioned Aug. 4 on KCRG-ABC in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The University’s ACORN “heart jacket” study also was mentioned on KWGN-WB in Denver, KHBS/KHOG-ABC in Ft. Smith, Ark., KYTV-NBC in Springfield, Mo., WTVF-CBS in Nashviille., WCMH-NBC in Columbus, Ohio and MSMH-NBC in Columbus, Ohio.

Sarah Barlow, M.D. (pediatrics) was quoted in a number of newspapers nationally, including Santa Barbara (Calif.) News-Press, Vinita (Okla.) Daily Journal, Fort Madison (Iowa) Daily Democrat, Salisbury (N.C.) Post and Enterprise-Journal (McComb, Miss.) about her research on pediatric obesity.

Robert Blaskiewicz, M.D. (obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health) was quoted in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader Observer-Dispatch (Utica, N.Y.) and the Mobile (Ala.) Register about hormone replacement therapy.

Adrian DiBisceglie, M.D. (hepatology) was interviewed by Drug Discovery Today regarding a new therapy for liver cancer that was reported in Cancer Research.

Dee Anna Glaser (dermatology) was quoted in the August edition of the national magazine Allure about kinetin for wrinkles and to make skin look better. She was quoted in the Nashville Tennessean and in the Miami Herald about how to treat sunburn.

Kenneth Haller, M.D. (pediatrics) was quoted in a number of newspapers nationally about about children who see their parents exercising being more likely to emulate the habit.

Craig Leonardi, M.D. (dermatology) was quoted in Biotechnology Newswatch and on Lycos Finance and collegeclub.com regarding new drugs in development for psorias. His research was cited in the San Francisco Business Times.

Suzanne Mahon (Cancer Center) was interviewed by the Associated Press on genetic counseling.

NURSING
Joan Hrubetz, Ph.D. (dean) was interviewed Aug. 16 by NurseWeek magazine regarding the nursing shortage.

The increased applications to Saint Louis University School of Nursing following the 9/11 tragedy was mentioned in the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union.

PUBLIC SERVICE
James Gilsinan, Ph.D. (dean) was quoted in the magazine Government Technology in a story about the college’s Global Information Systems lab is working with local police and schools to provide detailed information about the layout of schools.

PUBLIC HEALTH
Bruce Clements, M.P.H. (Center for Bioterrorism) was interviewed Aug. 26 by the Virginian Pilot about how local communities with fragmented governments can prepare for a bioterrorism or terrorism event.

Robyn Housemann, Ph.D. (community health) was interviewed Aug. 19 by wired.com about whether schools are doing enough to promote exercise and discourage pediatric obesity.
