SLU's Make a Difference Day was covered Oct. 28 by KMOV-TV Channel 4 and KPLR-TV Channel 11. Bernie Schaefer, director of the Center for Leadership and Community Service, was interviewed for the stories. The event also drew Brenda Warner.

A bone marrow drive held at Busch Memorial Center for a local boy was covered Oct. 28 by KMOV-TV Channel 4, KPLR-TV Channel 11 and KSDK-TV Channel 5.

ADVANCED DENTAL EDUCATION
James McGivney, D.D.S. (advanced dental education) was quoted regarding forensic dentistry in the Waco Tribune Herald, Portland Oregonian and the Patriot Leader (Quincy, Mass.).

ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONS
Mildred Mattfeldt-Beman, Ph.D. (nutrition and dietetics) was interviewed Oct. 24 by KPLR-TV Channel 11 regarding the Fall Culinary Institute, which brought together chefs and dietitians to explore healthy and delicious cooking techniques.

Mark Reinking (physical therapy) and a patient were interviewed Oct. 24 by KMOV-TV Channel 4 for a story on how to prevent sports injuries in kids. His appointment to the Specialty Council on Sports Physical Therapy was covered by South County Journal, Southwest City Journal, South Side Journal, South City Journal, Oakville Mehlville Journal and Southwest County Journal.

William Hart, Ph.D (nutrition and dietetics) was quoted in the St. Louis Review regarding over-the-counter remedies advertised to cure every possible ailment.

Tim Lomperis, Ph.D. (political science) was interviewed Oct. 26 live on the set of KTVI-TV Channel 2 and KMOV-TV Channel 4, and on Oct. 25 by KMOX-AM 1120 about the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. He also was interviewed Oct. 26 by KMOX-AM 1120 about reports that the first ground troop efforts in Afghanistan were nearly disastrous. In addition, he was interviewed Oct. 23 by the Philadelphia Inquirer about what do with Osama bin Laden if and when he is captured.

Ken Warren, Ph.D. (political science) was interviewed live during drive time Oct. 25 by KTSA-FM 55 (San Antonio) about the political implications of the anthrax scare in Washington, D.C.

Thomas Shippey, Ph.D. (English) was interviewed Oct. 22 by Catholic News Service about the upcoming "Lord of the Rings" movie.

Thomas Madden, Ph.D. (history) was interviewed by Epoca, Brazil's weekly news magazine about the Crusades and their role in the present struggle.

Benedict Ashley (health care ethics) was quoted in Catholic Universe Bulletin regarding biotechnological advances and theology.

John Brehany (health care ethics) was featured in the St. Cloud Visitor (Minn.) about a lecture he gave.

MEDICINE
Mark Buller, Ph.D. (infectious diseases) was interviewed Oct. 25 by Science, magazine, Oct. 26 by the Tampa Tribune and live Oct. 26 on National Public Radio regarding his smallpox research and about smallpox in general. He also was featured on a front-page story Oct. 7 regarding his smallpox research in the Southwest City Journal. He also was quoted about smallpox in the San Jose Mercury News.

Bruce Bacon, M.D. (gastroenterology and hepatology) was interviewed Oct. 25 by KMOV-TV Channel 4 regarding hemochromatosis, a common genetic disorder. The story will run in late November and will be highly promoted as part of "sweeps" ratings month.

Ken Haller, M.D. (pediatrics) was interviewed Oct. 22 by WSIE, the NPR affiliate in Edwardsville, live on the morning show Oct. 23 on KTRS 550 AM and live at noon Oct. 25 on KSDK-TV Channel 5 regarding Halloween safety tips for children. Also, he was profiled in the Belleville News Democrat as part of a "where are they now" feature. Haller had been featured in the Sunday magazine of the paper 10 years earlier for his inner city work caring for children in East St. Louis.

John Richart, M.D. (hemotology/oncology) was interviewed Oct. 25 by KMOV-TV Channel 4 about the health status of a 19-year old leukemia patient, and the importance of donating bone marrow to be added to the national registry.

Micheal Wolverson, M.D. (radiology) was interviewed Oct. 25 by KTVI-TV Channel 2 discussing the benefits and limitations of full body scans.

Donald Kennedy, M.D. (infectious diseases) was interviewed Oct. 24 by the Wall Street Journal and KPLR-TV Channel 11 about smallpox. Also, he was interviewed Oct. 23 by a business columnist for Reuters News Service about practical measure to prevent anthrax contamination.

Katherine Lichtenberg, DO, MPH (community and family medicine) was interviewed live on the air on Oct. 24 by KMOV TV Channel 4 regarding anthrax. She was interviewed on related issues by the Belleville News Democrat on Oct. 23.

Sharon Frey, M.D. (infectious diseases) appeared live via satellite on "The Early Show" on CBS to discuss smallpox vaccine research. She was interviewed about her smallpox study Oct. 22 by USA Today and CNSnews.com, Oct. 23 by the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, by KSDK-TV Channel 5, KMOV-TV Channel 4, KTVI-TV Channel 2, KPLR-TV Channel 11, Metro News Service and KMOX 1120 AM. She was photographed and interviewed for a story that ran Oct. 14 in the Southwest City Journal, South Side Journal, South City Journal, Oakville Mehlville Journal, South County Journal and Southwest County Journal.

Robert Belshe, M.D. (infectious diseases) was interviewed by the Newhouse Newspaper chain regarding "the pace of science" in light of the terrorist attacks. He appeared on the "Nightly Business Report" on PBS Oct. 22 discussing how the attacks could affect vaccine research and the work of biotech companies, along with the SLU smallpox vaccine research. He was quoted in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch regarding epidemic intelligence service officers.

Dee Anna Glaser, M.D. (dermatology) was interviewed by KTVI-TV Channel 2 regarding toenail and fingernail fungus problems. She was featured in a front-page story that ran Oct. 20 in the Southwest City Journal regarding the use of botox to alleviate tension headaches.

Sarah Barlow, M.D. (pediatrics) is quoted in the October issue of Parenting magazine regarding kids and weight loss.

She was interviewed by KSDK-TV Channel 5 regarding how parents and kids should be dealing with the attack and how these issues relate to Halloween. She was quoted regarding human resiliency in the face of terrorist attacks by Catholic Key (Kansas City), Lake Shore Visitor (Pa.), the Evangelist (Albany, N.Y.) and Catholic Herald (Madison, WI.)

D. Douglas Miller, M.D. (internal medicine) was quoted in the Ladue News regarding SLUCare, a new service being offered by SLUCare and Saint Louis University Hospital.

Patricia Monteleone, M.D. was interviewed by the St. Louis Business Journal regarding the Missouri Foundation for Health.

Jan Ryersee, Ph.D (pathology) was covered in the West and St. Charles zones sections of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch set a national record in his age group by running a distance of 121.4 miles in a 24-hour period.

Raymond Slavin, M.D. (allergy and immunology) was quoted in the Ladue News regarding pet owners and their allergy/asthma problems.

Two new grants received by the department of community and family medicine, which will help provide care in underserved areas, were covered in a story that ran in the West End-Clayton Word.

NURSING
Joan Carter, Ph.D. (nursing) was interviewed by KSDK-TV Channel 5 regarding the possibility of more nurses joining unions.

Joanne Kraenzle Schneider Ph.D. (nursing) was mentioned in the South Side Journal regarding her study of the effect of the power of positive thinking on exercise.

The school's Accelerated Option program was mentioned in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The program at SLU, which allows a college graduate to get a nursing degree in one-year and was the first of its kind in the country, served as a model for a similar program at Cleveland State University.
