SLU Rowing Takes Awards
Saint Louis University’s Rowing Crew competed in the 2005 St. Louis Indoor Rowing Championships on Saturday, Jan. 29, held at Washington University in St. Louis. Saint Louis University junior Ryan Wilson took first place in the collegiate men’s open division, while sophomore Meghan Butler captured the gold for Collegiate Women’s Lightweight. The competition was hosted by the Saint Louis Rowing Club who annually sponsors the 2000 meter sprint race for collegiate, junior (high school) and masters level rowers.
Founded in 1999 SLU Rowing Crew, a club sport, is coached by the Saint Louis Rowing Club’s Master’s group coach, Scott Allison. Allison, a volunteer coach, works hard to keep the student-run organization on the competitive track. Crew is a year-round sport with major competitions taking place in the fall and the spring. Currently, SLU Crew is training for spring competition, which begins in March. Rowers get up at 4:30 a.m. every weekday for practice, driving thirty minutes to Creve Coeur Lake to row. SLU Rowing Crew’s next race will be held in Omaha, NE, on April 3. The following weekend the team will compete in the Washington University Invitational on April 11.
Since SLU Crew is a club sport, it receives no funding directly from the University. Therefore, it takes great dedication on the part of team members to not only compete as rowers but also to fundraise and keep the team “above water”.
