Volunteers Needed for Geriatric Depression StudyST. LOUIS -- Saint Louis University is recruiting volunteers to study the effectiveness of Escitalopram (Lexapro) in treating geriatric patients who have depression. Lexapro is an SSRI antidepressant that was approved by the FDA about two years ago to treat depression.Study participants will receive medication, laboratory tests and weekly outpatient physician visits at no charge during the 12-week study. All study participants will receive the medication. Those eligible must be between 65 and 90 years old and have a prior diagnosis of major depression for at least four weeks. They may not have taken Lexapro or Citalopram (Celexa) in the past. Twenty volunteers are needed. Philip LeFevre, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, is the principal investigator.
