SLU History Professor to Appear in A&E DocumentaryST. LOUIS -- Thomas Madden, Ph.D., chair of the University’s history department, will appear in a documentary about the upcoming Hollywood film “Kingdom of Heaven.” The film, which stars Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson is about the Crusades in the 12th century. The documentary will look at the historical events portrayed in the film.
Madden is a leading expert on the Crusades and has authored several books on the topic including, “A New Concise History of the Crusades” (Lanham: Rowman and Littlefield, 2005). The book recently was chosen by the New York Police Department's Counter Terrorism Division as its "book of the month."
His book, Enrico Dandolo and the Rise of Venice (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003) has just been named the winner of the 2005 Otto Gründler Prize given by The Medieval Institute at the International Congress on Medieval Studies in May. It is an extremely prestigious international award given annually for the best book in medieval studies on any subject.
The documentary "Kingdom of Heaven" will premiere on the cable station A&E at 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 4.
