Ignatian Celebration Continues with Speaker SeriesA series of talks celebrating “Jesuit Jubilee ’06: A Vision, A Mission, A Prayer,” will be offered by the Missouri Province of the Jesuits at 7:30 p.m. Sundays at St. Francis Xavier College Church. Speakers also will preach at the 10 p.m. student Mass those evenings.The series opens on Jan. 22 when Gregory Boyle, S.J., will address “Tattoos on the Heart: Kinship and the Poor.” Boyle is a Jesuit priest, founder and executive director of Jobs for a Future/Homeboy Industries, an employment referral center and economic development program in Los Angeles. Begun in 1988 for at-risk and gang-involved youth, Jobs for a Future is a nationally-recognized center that monthly assists 1,000 people in re-directing their lives. On Feb. 26, Kevin Burke, S.J., will discuss “Saints as Dangerous Memories: Ignatian Spirituality in the Life of the University.” Burke is an associate professor of systematic theology and director of doctoral studies at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. His publications reflect his work in Latin America and his interest in liberation theology. He currently is editing a volume on Ignatian spirituality for Liturgical Books. The series will close March 26 when David Fleming, S..J, presents, “Peter Faber: What Does It Take to be a Companion of Christ?” Fleming, a theologian and author, is editor of the journal Review for Religious. He recently published Like the Lightning: The Dynamics of the Ignatian Exercises and has long been involved in formation and administration within the Society of Jesus. The Jesuit jubilee year is being celebrated by Jesuits and their colleagues worldwide in observance of the 450th anniversary of the death of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, and the 500th birthdays of two of the early Jesuits: the missionary St. Francis Xavier, and the spiritual guide Blessed Peter Faber.
