Fun-Filled Billiken World Fest Culminates Successful Atlas Week

The Parade of Nations passes under an Atlas Week banner.

With inspiring discussions, enlightening events and fun festivals, Atlas Week 2006 was major success once again.

The theme of this year’s Atlas Week was “Political and Social Justice in a Global World.” Events directly addressed this theme as well what people can do to contribute to a better life for all.

The week’s Signature Symposium keynote address by Nobel Peace laureate Jody Williams drew an estimated 500 people. Williams, who led the passage of the international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines, talked about the influence individuals can have in achieving social and political change.

A panel discussion commemorating the first anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II also was a highlight of the week. Experts from around the nation discussed the Pope's effect on the Catholic Church and the world.

The popular Billiken World Festival was greeted by 75-degree temperatures and huge crowds. Students, faculty and staff enjoyed the Parade of Nations, international cuisine, music, games and informational booths in the quadrangle.

All in all, the week offered more than 50 special events, including international films, open houses and student presentations.

Sponsored by the office of the provost, Atlas Week recognizes the international dimension of SLU’s academic programs and celebrates the University’s role in international education and service in light of its Jesuit mission and heritage.
