Skull Base Surgery Course Still Going StrongIn Spring 1984, Paul H. Young, MD was inspired to offer a hands-on surgical technique workshop on microsurgery at the base of the brain. The course was a tremendous success and demonstrated a great interest among health care professionals for practical, hands-on experience.April 19-21, 2006, twenty-six years later, Practical Anatomy & Surgical Education is offering the same course, Surgical Approaches to the Skull Base, in a state-of-the-art laboratory which is clearly one of the finest hands-on surgical facilities in the world. Under the direction of Ossama Al-Mefty, MD, FACS, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, neurosurgeons will see demonstrations of surgical approaches and have hands-on opportunities to apply those techniques during the lab sessions in the Zeiss Learning Center. Dr. Al-Mefty is a “world-renowned neurosurgeon, recognized as a pioneer in skull base surgery and as an innovator of refinements in surgical techniques.” Physicians are traveling from 18 countries -- Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Syria and 12 states of the United States to participate in his course.
