Guantanamo to Gerrymandering: Constitutional Experts Explore Recent Supreme Court Decisions

Saint Louis University law professors will discuss highlights of the recently completed Supreme Court term and will look ahead to the new session during the SLU’s annual Constitution Day observance at noon Tuesday, Sept. 19.

A panel of SLU’s top constitutional law experts will examine some of the high court’s most significant — and controversial — cases of the season, including the legality of military commissions to try Guantanamo Bay detainees, the insanity defense and gerrymandering of congressional districts.

The panel also will consider the impact of the recent changes to the court’s line up, as well as what is on tap for the next session, including the constitutionality of race-based assignment of public school students.

Eric Claeys, J.D., who clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, will serve as moderator. Panelists include:

  • Fred Bloom, J.D., federal court system and class action lawsuits expert
  • Isaak Dore, LL.M, world-renowned international law scholar
  • Roger Goldman, J.D., noted Supreme Court scholar
  • Joel Goldstein, J.D., leading expert on the vice-presidency
  • Alan Howard, J.D., the University’s foremost scholar on the First Amendment
  • Sue McGraugh, J.D., former public defender and authority on criminal law
  • Doug Williams, J.D., environmental law and congressional powers expert

The free event is open to the public and will be held in Room 303 of SLU’s Morrissey Hall, 3700 Lindell Blvd. For more information, call (314) 977-2766
