SLU Makes Princeton Review List of Nation’s Best Colleges for Undergraduate Education

Only 15 percent of all four-year colleges in the nation are recognized

The Princeton Review has named Saint Louis University one of the top institutions in the country for undergraduate education. SLU also was listed as one of the best universities in the Midwest in the 2007 edition of Princeton Review's annual book, "The Best 361 Colleges."

Only about 15-percent of four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges made the publication.

"We consider these colleges the best in the nation academically" said Robert Franek, author of the book at The Princeton Review, which does not rank the colleges in the book 1 to 361 in any single category.

The "Best 361 Colleges" rankings are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 110,000 students attending the colleges in the book. Students rated their schools in several areas and reported on their campus experience.

In the survey, SLU students spoke highly of the University's business, pre-med and pre-law programs as well as unique programs in aviation and nutrition. Survey respondents also noted that SLU students are friendly and the University offers a great library.

In the survey, the students also praised the University's values-based curriculum, which one student said "forces you to examine your worldview from the moment you step on campus and helps you discover what your beliefs really are."

One student told Princeton that "the Jesuit tradition means that SLU really strives to instill the values of service, leadership and diversity in the students," while another wrote, "SLU's efforts to encourage community service give many students their first taste of the real world and better prepare them to venture out into it after graduation."

SLU students also gave high marks to campus life, with one student observing, "The great thing about our campus is its location [near] the heart of downtown St. Louis. It is very easy to get around." The survey also found that "the typical SLU student is involved in various organizations and enjoys college life while staying focused and studying hard."

The Princeton Review accolades follow on the heels of honors from U.S.News & World Report. The magazine named SLU a best value in higher education for the ninth consecutive year and ranked the University overall among the top-five Catholic institutions in the country.
