Orthopaedic Surgery Celebrates Opening of New Center at Anheuser-Busch Institute

ST. LOUIS – Faculty and staff are invited to help celebrate the opening of the Orthopaedic Center 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 4 at Anheuser-Busch Institute, 1755 S. Grand Blvd. Guests will be served refreshments and will receive a small commemorative gift.

The center, a collaboration between the department of orthopaedic surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and Saint Louis University Hospital, opened July 5. Previously, surgeons saw patients for routine appointments at the Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Center on Carr Lane and performed outpatient surgery at ABI.

The new center has consolidated SLUCare orthopaedic specialists’ clinic space with outpatient surgery and the university hospital’s physical medicine and rehabilitation department.

The new center includes 14 exam rooms, three digital radiography rooms, physician workspace, new patient registration and waiting areas, and access to ABI’s ambulatory surgery center.

The move has been a positive one, says Berton R. Moed, M.D., chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery. The new center is not only roomier, more pleasant and filled with more modern conveniences, but it is also has practical benefits for patients.

Parking at the new center is more convenient, offering better access to the waiting room. Trauma patients with limited mobility who require help are assisted into the building by a patient access representative when they park.

Patients also benefit from having a single place to register, where the patient access reps help with scheduling.

Another notable benefit of the new facility is a digital imaging system that allows the transfer of images between ABI and Saint Louis University Hospital.

"This has really streamlined the process; the inpatient X-rays and studies, such as MRI and CT scans, are at our fingertips," Moed says, noting that there is rapid turnover access to all other chart materials as well.

Barbara Scott, R.N., the nurse manager for the department of orthopaedic surgery, agrees.

"With the ability to bring up not only the current radiology films, but also the injury radiology films, our patients are able to see side-by-side images of what their injury looked like the day they came to SLU Hospital and where they are today," Scott says. "Having this technology has really provided our patients with the opportunity to see just how far they have come in their rehabilitation and healing processes."

Patients can enjoy a one-stop visit for follow-up care in the Orthopaedic Center and for physical and occupational rehabilitation in the same facility where they are provided with easy access and free parking.

H.C. Abbott, an administrator at Saint Louis University Hospital responsible for construction, maintenance and security, oversaw construction of the new space.

As a result of the construction, the department of ophthalmology experienced some changes; the optical shop was relocated (and expanded) to the first floor, and schedulers and offices moved to the third floor of ABI.

In addition to ophthalmology, dermatology also has offices in ABI. Established in 1836, Saint Louis University School of Medicine has the distinction of awarding the first M.D. degree west of the Mississippi River.
