First Winners for Retention Management Grants AnnouncedThe Retention Management Committee (RMC) recently established a grant program to award ten $500 mini-grants to support innovative activities that will increase undergraduate student retention. Four grant recipients who applied during the spring application period have already been chosen:Dr. Janet Kuebli and Dr. Richard D. Harvey of the Department of Psychology submitted a project proposal entitled “Lunch with a Psychology Professor.” By winning a drawing to have lunch with a professor, new or potential psychology majors will have the opportunity to discuss their interests outside of a classroom setting. The Commuter Student Association proposed the “Commuter Connection Program” in which freshman commuter students will be paired with upper-class commuter student mentors who will meet with them on a regular basis to help ease their transition into college life and get them involved with campus events. Patricia Swatek and Julie King of the College of Public Service submitted the “Public Service Student Association Brochure” project. Members of the College of Public Service Student Association (PSSA) will work together to create a brochure for their organization, which will serve to unite existing members, recruit new members, and recruit qualified outside speakers. Karla D. Scott, Ph.D. and Charlene Teaser-Polk, M.S., M.P.H. from the Department of African American Studies proposed a project entitled “SOJOURN,” a mentoring project targeting incoming black female students that will pair them with interested faculty mentors. The RMC is now re-opening the call for proposals for unique, retention-oriented projects to be implemented during the spring semester. Proposals may be submitted by individual faculty or staff, by groups of faculty and/or staff, and by student groups via their faculty or staff advisors. Please call Student Educational Services at 977-2930 and ask for Barbara if you have questions or if you would like the proposal packet to be e-mailed to you, or stop by the SES office to pick up a packet. Mini-grant proposals are due by 5:00 pm on December 1, 2006. |
