Saint Louis University Museum Of Art Presents 'De Montmarte'The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to host De Montmarte, an exhibition of the work of Mariano Yunta Lopesino from the collection of Katie and Richard Kelly. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, September 15 in the contemporary galleries of the Saint Louis University Museum of Art.
As a young man in his native Spain, Lopesino became fascinated with the work of Spanish Baroque master Diego Velaquez. After a formal education at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and Circulo de Bellas Arte in Madrid, Yunta embarked on his artistic career. His first Paris exhibition took place in the Salon de l’Art Libre in 1962. Since that time he has participated in many individual and collective exhibitions in Spain, France, Germany, Brazil, Belgium, and the United States. He has received top recognition for his work, including the Silver Medal of the City of Paris. Yunta’s drawings depict everyday streets and urban scenes, portraits and views of the Paris skyline. They were never intended to be used as preliminary studies for paintings and, as Yunta calls them, they are his “finger exercises.” The idea of “the image in space” has always been a component of Yunta’s work. He applies brush strokes of opaque oil paint which swirl in varying directions. The effect of transparency is nothing but the personal pressure of his hand when painting. The collector, Richard Kelly, is a retired executive of the Mallinckrodt Group. He is a Saint Louis University alumnus and is a fervent supporter of the Jesuit mission. He and his wife, Katie, reside in Kirkwood, MO.
