Social Justice Night Planned for Sept. 26

The Doerr Center for Social Justice Education and Research will host its annual Social Justice Night from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Tegeler Hall. This year’s focus will be on “Creative Approaches to Social Justice Work.” The event is also a celebration of the Center’s 10th anniversary.

The evening’s Msgr. Shocklee Kick-off Speaker will be Fr. Ted Gabrielli, S.J., M.S.W. Gabrielli is the Provincial Assistant for Social Ministries in the California Province of the Society of Jesus, and part-time pastor at Most Holy Trinity Parish in San Jose. Gabrielli is also co-leader of the Ignatian Family Teach-In at the School of the Americas Annual Protest Vigil, and is active in working nationally and internationally for social justice in environmental and immigration policy.

Breakout sessions will offer participants the opportunity to hear presentations by local organizations using creative tools to advocate for social justice. Presentations will include:

a performance of “Stories of Hope,” a spoken-word presentation by and about women who have experienced the criminal justice system and who now participate in support groups with Let’s Start, Inc.;

  • segments of “Nightwork,” a film by the Otro Mar Project highlighting those who make their living at night, and a discussion about digital video to inspire social change;
  • a panel discussion about using creative techniques to organize for political change; and
  • the use of arts as healing tools for refugee and immigrant youth.
  • Presenting organizations include Let’s Start, Inc., the Otro Mar Project, the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma, Missouri ProVote, Missouri Women’s Coalition and Carnahan for Congress.

    Informational booths will also be offered by community and campus organizations involved in social justice work.

    A reception and booth displays will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Tegeler Hall lobby. The Shocklee Lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in Carlo Auditorium, with breakout sessions following the talk from 7-8:30pm.
