Micah House Begins Phase II of Development

The Micah Program has begun Phase II of its development. According to Donald Stump, Director of the program, over the next five years the number of students participating is expected to rise from the current 115 to about 230.

As part of the expansion, the program plans to offer freshmen entering in the fall of 2007 a new track focused on Hispanic immigrants. Students who choose this option will have opportunities to study Hispanic culture for a term in Central America and to perform community service in the growing Latino community around Cherokee Street in the Near South Side. The program will also continue its long-term commitment to service in the Shaw Neighborhood and its distinctive mix of life in community, faith-based service, and study of urban social issues in special classes tied to Micah floors in Marguerite Hall.

On September 9, the program kicked off Phase II with a service workday to help one of its new community partners, Acción Social Comunitaria. Fifty Micah students, faculty, and staff teamed up to help the organization renovate the former St. Thomas Aquinas School on south Iowa Street, which will become a community and social-services center.

Other community organizations that students in the new track will be involved with include La Clinica, St. Cecilia’s Hispanic Ministry, and the International Institute.
