Occupational Science Conference to be Held at SLUThe Fifth Annual Research Conference for the Society for the Study of Occupation: USA will be held October 5-7, 2006 at the Water Tower Inn at Saint Louis University. This will be the society’s first meeting in the Midwest and will be hosted by the Doisy College of Health Science and Department Of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy. Saint Louis University is one of only a few occupational therapy programs in the country to have an undergraduate degree in occupational science. The fifth annual research conference will have a pre-conference research workshop titled “Building and Sustaining Research Programs”. The workshop will have accomplished researchers from across the country share the opportunities and barriers to success as a research scholar. The Ruth Zemke Honorary Lecture in Occupational Science, the keynote address at this year’s conference, will be given by Dr. Charles Christiansen. The title of his presentation is “Meyer Revisited: Empirical Thoughts on Resilience and Life Balance.” Exciting papers, panels, and forums are planned and anticipated to be given by participants from not only across the US but also by interdisciplinary occupational scientists from around the world. This builds on last year’s international contingent of speakers and will bring new ideas and research resulting in a very stimulating conference. The conference will once again host the annual business meeting, essential to guiding the organization in meeting its strategic goals with feedback from its members. Additional input will be gathered from members at a “Breakfast with the Board” session. An important ingredient of the conference for participants will be the continued emphasis on occupational balance that can include visits to Warhol’s Silver Clouds interactive art at the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art or the Lincoln Legacy historical display at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to visit St. Louis’s jewels such as the Arch, Forest Park, and the Missouri Botanical Garden, which is hosting the world class exhibit of Chihuly glass art.
