SLU Cardiologist Named Chairman of Heart Failure Society Committee

ST. LOUIS — Paul J. Hauptman, M.D., professor of internal medicine in the cardiology division of the department of internal medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, has been named chairman of the Care Standards Committee of the Heart Failure Society of America. The committee is responsible for designing ways to facilitate the translation of clinical practice guidelines for heart failure into practice and to improve quality and delivery of heart failure care.

"These are obviously huge issues," says Hauptman, also a SLUCare cardiologist. "Many options are now available to heart failure patients, and we want to make certain that these advances can translate into success in the community."

Hauptman, director of heart failure and the medical director of the heart transplant program at the School of Medicine, is also a consultant to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel that reviews cardiac devices from defibrillators to ventricular assist devices. His research interests include quality of life assessment and outcomes measurements in advanced heart failure.

The Heart Failure Society of America publishes the Journal of Cardiac Failure.
