LOUIS -- As the country begins to implement health care reform, Saint Louis University School of Public Health has launched a new bachelor of science in community health major.

"The timing for our undergraduate initiative could not have been better," said Michael Rozier, S.J., who directs the new program.

"This generation of students wants to ask big picture questions and challenge assumptions. Our undergraduate program comes out of a Jesuit model of education. We will be training students to solve complex social issues."

SLU's bachelor of science in community health program weaves in a strong service thread and focuses on global health issues. It is an excellent option for pre-med students who can choose a track that includes the biology, chemistry and physics foundation necessary for medical school.

"We have to start focusing on preventing diseases and a physician who has that background will be particularly sought after," Rozier said.

Fast Track Graduate Degree Option

In addition, students who want to continue on the graduate school track and receive their master's in public health can shave a year off their education. Through the accelerated 4 plus one option, they can take graduate level courses during their senior year and add additional coursework to receive their MPH and undergraduate degree in five years instead of the usual six.

The degree also might appeal to students who want a bachelor's degree that will prepare them to work with community based organizations that promote health and prevent diseases as health educators, environmental assessors and epidemiologists.

These professionals will be in high demand because the American public health workforce is growing older, which could create a shortage of workers.

In the two months since the B.S. in community health was announced, 10 students have declared it as their major.

On the Vanguard

Undergraduate public health programs are relatively new, yet extremely popular, Rozier said.

"SLU is now on the vanguard of this new approach to public health education. We hope to educate young men and women who will be agents of change in the field of health. Our goal is to provide undergraduate students who are interested in the health sciences with an additional option: one that allows them to improve the health of entire communities locally and globally," he said.

"We've spoken with faculty from schools that have initiated undergraduate public health programs to see if they've had any problems. They told us there were so many students who wanted to get into the programs that they were having problems marshalling the forces to meet the demand. We thought, 'that's a problem we want to have.'"

Learn more about the program on the School of Public Health's Web site.

Accredited for 19 years, Saint Louis University School of Public Health remains the only accredited school of public health in Missouri. It is one of 41 fully accredited public health schools in the U.S. and the only accredited Jesuit school in the nation.
News & EventsNews Centerhttp://www.slu.edu/x31064.xmlNews RoomBilliken Athleticshttp://www.slubillikens.comCalendar of EventsFast FactsContacts & Resourceshttp://www.slu.edu/x15181.xmlUniversitymobile/template/logo-slu.pnghttp://www.slu.edu/x35985.xmlhttp://www.slu.edu/rel-news-community-health-undergrad-degree-41CCBot/2.0 (http://commoncrawl.org/faq/)
