Dr. Lea has over 40 years of combined experience as an educator, school district administrator and professor in educational leadership. As a school administrator he has served as a principal at the secondary level and as a superintendent in various districts across the state, including Ralls County R-2, Fulton No. 58, and, most recently, at Valley Park Public Schools where he was selected as the Missouri State Superintendent of the Year in 2004. Statewide leadership positions he has held include President of the Cooperating School Districts Board of Directors (65 school districts), Founding Chairman of the Missouri School District Accountability Committee, and Chair of the Missouri Association of School District Administrators Legislative Committee. Dr. Lea has also had a successful business career in the private financial sector, serving as Vice President in the public finance department for A.G. Edwards and Wachovia Securities. Dr. Lea joined the faculty of St. Louis University in 2006 as an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lea has been involved in numerous educational endeavors; including, working with facility master planning, school district financing, implementing instructional technology, extensive work with school district accountability, and conducting numerous district operating and debt service levy elections. He has published in various scholarly journals and been invited to present at numerous professional conferences on topics ranging from pre-school facilities to distributed leadership. Other honors include the Citation of Merit for Outstanding Achievement and Meritorious Service from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Education. He is the recipient of the Missouri Association of School Administrators Pearce Award, Educator Technology Award, and Outstanding Emeritus Educator Award for the St. Louis Region.
