Program Aims

To develop reflective practitioners educated in the liberal tradition and committed to service, inquiry and value centered teaching.

Program Goals

The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program seeks to insure commitment to the philosophy statement of the Department of Educational Studies through adherence to the following Undergraduate Teacher Education goals:

  1. To expand awareness of the needs of others,
  2. To give self over to intellectual activity which promotes the welfare of others,
  3. To act on one's own beliefs and provide service as an expression of self;

The objectives of the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program are correlated with the goals of the program and are as follows:

Upon completion of the undergraduate teacher education program at Saint Louis University, the preservice teacher should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the teaching-learning process.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the American public school system.
  5. Organize and manage varied learning groups as appropriate to the needs and/or interests of students and goals of the lesson.
  6. Effectively implement instructional plans and use appropriate instructional techniques including technology.
  7. Effectively communicate with students.
  8. Help students develop positive self-concepts.
  9. Facilitate the independence of the student as learner.
  10. Effectively meet the needs of exceptional students.
  11. Effectively assess students' needs and progress.
  12. Establish a positive learning environment.
  13. Meet professional responsibilities.
  14. Demonstrate an understanding of family and community relations, including communication with and involvement of parents.
  15. Demonstrate a comprehension of diversity: ethnic, gender, social class, race, religion, region, disability, and its implications.
  16. Demonstrate knowledge of the Missouri Show Me Standards and curriculum frameworks as applicable to the area to be taught.

Admission Procedures

Students seeking admission to the Department will pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in one or more teaching areas. Students should apply for admission to the University through the Admissions Office, located in DuBourg Hall, Room 119.

Undergraduate students may apply to the College of Public Service during their freshman year. At the end of their freshman year, students are invited to declare their major and request admission into the Teacher Certification Program. Students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average to be accepted into the Teacher Certification Program as well as into the non-certification major.

The Teacher Certification program includes the following requirements:

  1. Students must have high school ACT or SAT scores on file with the University,
  2. Students must achieve a passing score on C-Base test (information on this test is available in the Student Educational Services office),
  3. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5,
  4. Students must not be on disciplinary probation,
  5. Students must submit to certain criminal background checks which may include being fingerprinted for FBI and Highway Patrol background checks. These criminal background checks would be performed in order to comply with State and local school district rules. Students should be aware that adverse findings may affect their ability to successfully complete the teacher certification program.
  6. Students must pass a tuberculosis screening test in order to comply with State and local school district rules.

Academic Support Services for Admission to Teacher Education

The University has a variety of support services for students. The following services are available to support those who may have difficulty meeting the entrance requirements to the Teacher Certification Program. Students should consult with the Certification Officer for more details.

  1. Students with disabilities should contact the Disabilities Coordinator for the University. The Coordinator will serve as an advocate for providing appropriate accommodations.
  2. Students who have not passed the C-Base should work with the Writing Center or with tutors available from various academic departments.

Retention in Teacher Certification Program

Retention in the teacher education certification program is a continuous process initiated upon acceptance into the program. Student records are checked prior to registration for each semester.

In order to remain in the Teacher Certification program the students must:

  1. Maintain a 2.5 or better grade point average (GPA). Failure to do so will automatically place the student on teacher certification probation until the appropriate GPA is achieved. The student's record will be reviewed each semester for reacceptance; however, the student must initiate this procedure. Probation will be removed upon reattainment of a 2.5 GPA.

    A student who receives a grade of less than C in more than three courses required for certification will be suspended from the Teacher Education Certification Program.
  2. A student must receive a minimum grade of C in all professional education courses required for certification by the Missouri State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. If a grade below C is received, the student will be placed on teacher certification probation. Probation will be lifted upon attainment of a C in the course, provided the course in question has not been repeated more than two times.


  3. A student who has been suspended from a teacher certification program may be considered for reinstatement; however, reinstatement shall not be available to a student who has been suspended two times.

  4. While on probation, a student may continue the course of studies toward teacher certification, provided the next semester's enrollment is not the professional semester. The Teacher Certification Admission Committee and the Chairperson of the Department will be responsible for all decisions concerning a student's status in the teacher certification program.

  5. A student may be placed on probation or suspended from the teacher certification program as a result of actions including, but not limited to, unprofessional conduct or violations against the College of Public Service Academic Honesty Policy.

  6. A student who does not maintain current/continuous enrollment at Saint Louis University for a period greater than two semesters must apply for reinstatement into the teacher certification program and must meet those criteria for admission in effect at the time of reinstatement.


Sequencing of Education Courses

The Department has instituted the "block" concept into the teacher education program. Students will be required to take the Professional Education courses in a specific sequence.

The first block addresses the issues related to classroom observation, studying learning theory, examining the schools as a social system and general information related to the profession of teaching.

Block two examines human growth and development, diversity in the classroom as it relates to culture, race, sex, learning styles, exceptionality and different styles of teaching to address the many differences found in the classroom.

The remaining blocks include methods of teaching various subject matter areas and levels, diagnosing learning problems and developing learning activities. In many of the methods courses practicum experiences are required.

The culmination of the program is the Professional Semester block. Students spend the majority of this semester teaching in a public or private school.


Professional Semester

Professional Semester is usually completed during the last or second to last semester of the academic program. This semester is a 14-16 hour block of courses including behavior management laboratory, legal issues, professional development and student teaching. During this semester the student will spend the greatest amount of time teaching in a school setting.

All courses in previous professional educational blocks must be completed before the Professional semester.

Secondary and middle teacher certification majors should have all courses in the chosen teaching field completed prior to the professional semester. Elementary, Early Childhood, Early Childhood Special Education and Special Education should have all methods courses completed prior to the Professional Semester.


Professional Semester Application Student Teaching

Students in the certification program apply for the Professional Semester in the Spring semester prior to the actual practice teaching year. The form for student teaching is available on the computers in McGannon Hall 118. This form requires the student to submit courses completed, grade point average, C-Base score and college transcripts.

Students planning to student teach in the Fall or Spring semester must complete a Student Teaching Application by February 14 of the previous Spring semester.

Student teaching applications will be accepted when all the following information/data is/are submitted:

  • Application, accurately completed,
  • ACT/SAT,
  • Satisfactory C-Base score,
  • Completed transcript request form,
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA,
  • Minimum of 2.5 in content field(s),
  • Satisfactory completion of all content field courses for secondary and middle,
  • Satisfactory completion of all prerequisite Education courses,
  • Criminal record check,
  • Child abuse check, and
  • TB test.


If any of the information is lacking, the application will not be accepted.

Placement in schools is arranged by the certification officer with input from the faculty at Saint Louis University. If there is a preference for placement, this should be made known to the certification officer. Under no circumstances should a student initiate contact with a school for this clinical experience.

Placement requests are reviewed in an attempt to find the best setting for each student teaching experience. The University in no way can guarantee the requested placement. School districts reserve the right to accept or reject student teachers. Therefore, mutual satisfaction of the student, University and school districts is the goal of each placement.

Advising in Teacher Education Program

Because completion of the program is related to the College of Public Service core requirements as well as certification requirements of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, a student shall consult regularly with several academic advisors to be certain that all standards are met. Students should meet with the following advisors in reviewing their programs:

  • Major Advisor
    This person assists the student in planning the total teacher education program. Students in the secondary teacher certification program should have two major advisors, one in the teaching field and one in Teacher Education.
  • Teacher Certification Officer/Education Advisor
    The Certification Officer discusses all requirements included in the student's academic program. This includes review of the College of Public Service core, major, and teacher certification requirements.

Application for State Teacher Certification

Upon completion of all DESE and Saint Louis University requirements, the student must complete the Missouri Teacher Certification application. If the student has completed any transfer course work applicable to certification, the student must submit to the Certification Officer all official transcripts needed for certification.

The student must complete the appropriate forms for certification. The Certification Office has copies of the Missouri application only.

The application procedure is as follows: secure and complete the appropriate portion of the application, attach all necessary information that the State requests, and submit all to the Certification Officer. The Certification Officer will attach official transcripts, sign appropriate documents and mail to the address given by the student.

States vary greatly in the time taken to process certification papers. The State of Missouri may take several weeks. If you do not hear from a State Department in a reasonable time, please call the Certification Office at Saint Louis University to determine if the material was received and acted upon.


Exit Procedures

Students seeking teacher certification must meet the following exit requirements:

  1. Complete all necessary forms for graduation. These forms are available in the College of Public Service. Check class schedule book for deadline dates for making application.
  2. Complete the Missouri State Teacher's certification form and submit it to the Certification Officer with all appropriate transcripts from other institutions, if necessary.
  3. Have a grade point of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  4. Have a minimum of 2.5 grade point average or better in professional education courses with no grade below a C. Content field must be a C or better.
  5. Submit ACT or SAT score.
  6. Complete professional development seminar which includes development of a professional portfolio.
  7. Submit an evaluation from the cooperating teacher of student teaching experience.
  8. Submit an evaluation from the University supervisor of student teaching.
  9. Achieve a passing score on the Praxis as designated by the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  10. Successfully complete a program portfolio.

Major in Education

Students selecting a major in Education without the goal of becoming certified must make application through the College of Public Service Office in McGannon Hall, Room 220 or in the Office of Academic Advising in the Academic Resources Center.

Undergraduate students may apply to transfer to the College of Public Service after the first semester of their freshman year. Transfer applications may be obtained from the Academic Services Center, or from the Dean’s Office of the College of Public Service, McGannon Hall, Room 220. Students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average to be accepted into the College of Public Service.

Once accepted into the College of Public Service, students are invited to declare their major and request admission into the teacher education program. Students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average to be accepted into the teacher education program.

The major consists of 50 hours with a minimum of 32 hours and maximum of 36 hours within the Department of Educational Studies. Elective hours are selected, with the advisor's approval, from related courses in one or more other departments.

ELECTIVE 14 HOURS (minimum)

Elective hours should be selected from upper division education courses. The student, with the advisor, can create an area of concentration tailored to the student's future career needs. EDI-I-488-Senior Inquiry 3 hours is a required course. The senior inquiry is a special project designed by the student and the advisor that will reflect the student's particular area of emphasis. This project should be scheduled during the senior year.

Related Hours in Major (12-18 Hours)

The related hours (cognate) component will contain more than 12 hours as follows:

  1. At least 12 upper division (300-400 level) hours of coursework-related disciplinary fields, or
  2. Minimum or 12 hours beyond core requirement(s) or introductory course(s) in one department, or
  3. Completion of a departmentally approved certificate program or at least 12 upper division hours in a defined thematic area. Students should see their advisor for an approved list of courses.

Minor in Education
