Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education

This degree offering is intended for those students interested in pursuing careers in higher education teaching and/or administration. The student's program of studies will be individually tailored to complement one's interests and professional aspirations. The programs combine theory with practical insights provided by faculty who are both seasoned teachers and administrators. Many of the classes have practicing professionals enrolled as students so there is a blend of the theoretical with the lived experience of those participating in the classes.

The Ph.D. program consists of 30 credits beyond the master's degree, plus 12 credits of dissertation research. Ph.D. students take five post baccalaureate research courses. In addition to the formal research courses taken in the program, students research and write papers for all graduate courses.

Ordinarily, depending upon an individual's experience and academic preparation, higher education students are expected to become knowledgeable in the following areas in the study of higher education:

  • Organization and Administration in Higher Education
  • History of Higher Education
  • The Law in Higher Education
  • Student Development Theory
