Interlibrary Loan FAQs

What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan is a service through which circulating books not found in the MERLIN or MOBIUS libraries may be requested and obtained from other libraries. Requests for photocopied articles are obtained from other libraries

Who is eligible?
Current SLU Law faculty, law staff, and law students are eligible to use the ILL services of the Omer Poos Law Library. Other individuals should request ILL services from their academic, public or corporate library.

What can be requested?
Primarily photocopied articles and circulating books are available. Some types of material such as video cassettes, dissertations and looseleafs may be difficult to borrow. There is no limit to the number of items you may request at one time. If you are requesting a large number of books allow yourself enough time to obtain and use the information. Typically, books borrowed through interlibrary loan only have a two to three week loan period with no renewals.

Complete bibliographic information must be provided. Article requests must have the author, title, volume, date and page number.

How do I request a book through Interlibrary Loan?
To request the loan of a book not owned by Pius Library, complete the electronic request form available through ILLiad. Books requested must not be currently available through the MERLIN Consortium, or the MOBIUS network. Please check the MERLIN Library Catalog and MOBIUS Union Catalog before submitting any interlibrary loan request for a book.

How do I request a journal article through Interlibrary Loan?
You can obtain copies of articles from journals not owned by Omer Poos Law Library by filling out the photocopy request form available through ILLiad. Requested articles must be from journals not currently available through Omer Poos Law Library, or not available electronically through Pius Library's electronic journals or accessible databases. Before submitting a request, search the MERLIN Library Catalog and check the Full-Text E-journal Locator to see if the article is available electronically through Pius Library.

How can I check on the status of an Interlibrary Loan request?
You can check the status of your request by logging on to your ILLiad account.

How long do I have to wait for the material to get here?
We participate in several cooperative lending programs that provide fast turnaround time. Through OCLC we have access to libraries locally, regionally, and nationally. Generally photocopied articles arrive in four to five days and books arrive within a week to ten days.

How will you notify me when my material is ready to be picked up?
Our preferred method is to send an e-mail message to your e-mail account notifying you that your material has arrived and is ready for pick-up. Please indicate during ILLiad registration how you prefer to be notified when your material arrives. If you wish to change your notification method, you may do so in ILLiad. We will try to accommodate most requests; however, you must provide an accurate e-mail address for notification.

Where can I pick up my Interlibrary Loan item?

Returnable items can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. The book wrap on returnable items indicates the due date and any restrictions placed by the lending library. The loan period of the item depends on the policy of the lending library. Photocopy items are retrieved electronically as Adobe PDF documents from the ILLiad server.
Borrowed items must be returned on time. Interlibrary Loan is a privilege and a courtesy. Returning items late jeopardizes our borrowing relationship with the lending library

What are the costs?
The Omer Poos Law Library pays the first $10 of a book or photocopy charge for students. The remaining balance is the responsibility of the requestor. Faculty and staff members are not charged for interlibrary loan services.

What if I lose or damage a book obtained through Interlibrary Loan?
If the Omer Poos Law Library is billed for an overdue, lost or damaged book, charges will be passed on to you. Your student account will be billed even if the materials were requested for your journal.

How do I renew Interlibrary Loan materials?
You may request a renewal of an Interlibrary Loan item by logging on to your ILLiad account. Renewal requests must be placed before the item is due. Overdue items can not be renewed. Please note that the lending library is responsible for the decision as to whether an item can be renewed and for how long.

What if I am an RA or TA?
Contact the Interlibrary Loan office for instructions.

What if I am on a journal?
Items are to be requested in your name. Indicate on the interlibrary loan form the name of the journal you are associated with. You are responsible for the return of any item that has a due date.

Who do I contact if I have other questions?
Call the Interlibrary Loan office at 314-977-3314 or email your questions to the Interlibrary Loan Office your questions.

University Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the Law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that order would involve violation of the law.
