Dear
Colleague:
Welcome
to Saint Louis University!
By joining
our community, you have made the conscious decision to join
a closely-knit team of academics and professionals dedicated
to the cause of educating young women and men to be the
future moral and ethical leaders of society. You have joined
a community whose strength comes from its shared vision
of excellence in education and servant-leadership in the
Jesuit tradition.
I was
trained as a linguist, and although I no longer stand before
a classroom filled with students, I am still fascinated
with etymology, or the study of the origin of words. For
example, the term "community" is derived from
the Latin word "communis," meaning "fellowship."
And in the Middle Ages, a "community" came to
be synonymous with the word "universitas," or
" a body of fellows."
So it
is today that Saint Louis University is a community of fellows
dedicated to service, faith and social justice, and motivated
by a common vision of making SLU the finest Catholic university
in the nation.
With
this goal in mind, I am happy to have you as a member of
our community, and invite you to become fully involved with
the lives of our students and the life of the University.
In the words of George Bernard Shaw, "I am of the opinion
that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long
as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can."
Congratulations again, and welcome!
