The American Cancer Society Relay For Life
is a team event to raise funds to fight cancer and raise cancer
awareness in the community. It is a celebration of life honoring
cancer survivors. While the Relay is going on, team members
who are camping out, enjoying entertainment, food, games,
and camaraderie create a community party atmosphere. Although
the event is planned and executed by students, other members
of the Saint Louis University community are welcome to organize
teams and help fund-raise. In fact, one of our goals for this
year is to vastly increase faculty and alumni involvement.
Teams
of 8 – 15 people can come from departments, residence
hall floors, student organizations, or just groups of friends.
Signing up is easy! Simply email us for more details, stop
by an informational meeting, or come see us while we have
a table set up in the BSC (table and meeting dates, times
and locations listed below).
One
team member walks or runs the track in alternating shifts.
So, the event is referred to as a “Relay” because
teams pledge to have one team member on the track at all times.
The track is a social environment— walking around it,
you’ll see old friends and new friends talking about
the great time they are having! |
The
initial commitment is $10 per team member, which means that
each participant is committing themselves to each raising
a minimum of $100. The registration fee is due upon submission
of the registration form (see .PDF version available online
and see dates below). An event T-shirt will be distributed
to team members at the event if their registration fee is
paid by February 17th, and their commitment goal of $100 is
met by the night of the Relay. Team awards will be presented
at the event’s closing ceremony. Team Fund-raising to
meet this challenge is also encouraged!
Our
student involvement last year was superb, especially considering
that it was the University’s first Relay; we had 800
participants and raised over $85,000. This year, we are trying
to reach higher. Our goal is to have over 1000 participants
and to raise over $125,000. |
