The Department of Housing and Residence Life offers a comprehensive program focused on the holistic development of the first-year college student. Combining the residential experience, programmatic offerings, and the classroom setting allows our staff to target the needs of individual students to ease their transition into college at Saint Louis University.

Residential

The Griesedieck Complex (Gries, Walsh, Clemens halls) and Reinert Hall are included in the FYE Program, offering living spaces for new students. These buildings are unique in that they offer students the opportunity to live and learn with members of their own class, who are sharing similar transition experiences. Benefits of living in these buildings include:

  • Living in a smoke and substance free environment
  • Living in a single-gender floor community with visitation policies to allow maximum privacy
  • Access to an increased student staff to resident ratio (approximately 1:15 to 1:30 Resident Advisor to resident ratio)
  • Participation in an initiative called "Community Connections", which assures individualized contact between the Resident Advisors and residents twice a semester
  • Access to professional and paraprofessional staff specifically trained on meeting the needs of First Year Students
  • Programmatic opportunities for residents to get involved in school spirit and personal development experiences geared towards First Year Students

Students can preference a Residence Hall on their housing application. Your assignments seminar during SLU 101 will help you with your specific questions.

Programmatic

Programming in the First Year Residence Halls will focus on community building and personal development. Full-time professional staff, student Resident Advisors and student Hall Councils will plan activities and opportunities for residents to be involved on their floor and in their larger building.

Resources will frequently be provided in the residence halls. Some of these services include: career services, campus ministry, and academic services.

Parent Involvement

We know that the first year of college transition is stressful for not only the students, but for family members as well. We encourage parent involvement with First Year Students and the staff that is here to serve them.

The Welcome Week offers many opportunities for parent involvement with many opportunities such as the parents' Q&A Session. Parents can also expect regular newsletters from the department. Additionally, Family Weekend is a great time for parents and siblings to see how their First Year Students are doing with lots of fun activities planned.

Classroom

First Year Seminars and other academic opportunities complete the experience. Read more about the academic components of the First Year Experience Program on the Admissions web site.
