University Loft Kits
What is a Loft Kit? Which buildings can have Loft Kits? How does the loft get set up and taken down? How do I get a loft? How will I know when I get a loft? What if I want to cancel after I find out I received a loft? What if I change my Room Assignment Before or After School Begins? Do I own the loft? Can I get the name of the company so I can order a loft kit on my own ? What is a Loft Kit?Lofts are a furniture rental option that helps maximize floor space in your room. Each loft kit will allow the bed of one person to be elevated (72 inches from floor to top of mattress) on an additional set of bed ends that are then secured by support braces. This allows enough room below the bed for a desk and dresser (79 inches between the bed ends) to be places between and beneath the bed. The rental cost is $100 for the academic year. The price includes a safety rail, which helps protect students who turn a lot in their sleep from falling off. Many students feel that it is best to loft both beds in the room but others have found that even one loft in the room can be beneficial. The only option available for lofting a bed is to rent a loft kit from the university. Homemade loft kits are not allowed. (back to top) Which buildings can have Loft Kits?Loft kits are available for rent in Walsh, Clemens, Gries Tower, Reinert, Notre Dame, Fusz, DeMattias, and Laclede Houses. Other buildings do not have loftable beds. Preference is given to those in triple rooms. (back to top) How does the loft get set up and taken down?If you have contacted the department by the deadline a kit is installed in you room before you arrive in the fall. After you leave at the end of the academic year, University staff will remove the loft. Do not attempt to remove the loft yourself at any time. (back to top) How do I get a loft?If you would like to reserve a loft, you need to sign up in the housing portal on your MySLU account by July 15, 2008. How will I know when I get a loft?Beginning July 1, 2008, you may check our website to see if your name appears on the loft list. This is list updated every Friday throughout the summer. If you have been selected to receive a loft kit, your SLU student account will automatically be charged $100. Do not send any money! Typically the charge will appear on you bill sometime in late September or early October. (back to top)
What if I want to cancel after I find out I received a loft?Cancellations can be made in one of two ways:
For the cancellation to be processed you must provide:
What if I change my Room Assignment Before or After School Begins? If, before school begins, you have requested and been granted a room change, the ability to have your loft kit moved with you will be limited due to time constraints affiliated with preparing the campus for opening of the academic year. If this situation occurs we will assume that you would rather have the room change over the loft kit. If you would like a loft kit in your new room, please request this in writing to the reslife e-mail. State that you have changed rooms. Again this may or not be able to happen before you move in. The cost for this change is an additional $25.00. If you change your room after you have moved in, your loft kit will only be moved if you contact the Department of Housing and Residence Life make a request. Remember that not all buildings have loft kits and therefore we cannot move a loft kit to a building that does not have one. This service costs $25, otherwise the loft will be removed after you move out. (back to top) Do I own the loft? The loft is the property of the University and may not be rented or subleased. Like other pieces of University furniture, you may not remove the loft from your room. If you wish to have the loft removed you should contact the Housing and Residence Life Main office at 977-2811. Any student renting a loft agrees to assume all responsibility for and risks related to the loft kit. (back to top) Can I get the name of the company so I can order a loft kit on my own ?The companies that supply the kits have asked the University not to refer individuals to them. They typically require minimum orders of $5,000. (back to top) |
