What to Bring
You might want to bring the following to make your room more comfortable:
  • Telephone (see note about cordless phones)
  • Bed linens (extra long twin)
  • Desk lamp (not halogen) (Lamp Warning)
  • Bathroom items
  • Microwave (under 700 watts)
  • Health insurance card or policy information
  • Kitchen & laundry supplies
  • Wastebaskets for the room
  • Coaxial cable for your TV
  • Refrigerator under 3 cubic feet
  • Two-wheel dolly (for move in day only)

What not to Bring
Leave these items at home - they are prohibited.

  • 2.4 GHz cordless phones (5.8 GHz and 900 MHz are acceptable)
  • Anything with an open or exposed heating element (i.e. toaster)
  • Metal-tipped darts
  • Candles and incense
  • Pets (except for small fish)
  • Halogen lamps
  • Barbeque grills - including apartments

Making Connections

  • Mail - When you arrive and check in, you will receive a number for your mailbox, if you have not already received it, which is located centrally in the BSC..
  • Cable TV - Every room receives an "extended basic" cable package, which includes ESPN, MTV, CNN, TNT and other stations in addition to local network affiliates. Please bring your own coaxial cable cord.
  • Phone - You'll have local phone service already connected when you arrive, just plug in a quality phone. ITS offers a fantastic and competitive option for long distance calls. You may also bring with you a calling card or cell phone.
  • Internet - Every residence hall room has a connection to SLUNET, which provides access to the Internet, e-mail, and World Wide Web! All you will need is your computer, an Ethernet cable (25' recommended) and Ethernet card, and software. Before connecting to the SLU network, it is important that you visit the Norton download site and install Norton Antivirus for free. If you have questions, please call (314) 977-4000

Consider the following suggestions from the Environmental Task Force

Must Haves:

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFL):
Low-energy light bulbs are a guaranteed way to save money and help the environment. CFL’s save you the hassle of multiple trips to the store!  They will last you until graduation!
Find them: In all major stores
Rechargeable batteries:
From your calculator to your camera you’ll be using tons of batteries throughout the year.  Make sure to get your money’s worth by recharging your batteries!

Cleaning Products:
Keep your room sparkling clean and eco-friendly with all natural “Green Works” cleaning products

Recycled Paper Products:
Printer paper, notebook paper, spiral notebooks- every type of paper product is going recyclable! 
Find them: Office supply stores
Real silverware and dishes:
Avoid the wastefulness of plastic utensils and paper plates by bringing your own dishes to college!
Power strips:
Even when your appliances are off they’re still using power.  Bring power strips to link all your appliances so that you can really turn them off when you leave the room. 
Go Green Mug:
Buy a “Go Green” reusable mug on campus and save $.15 on coffee and fountain beverages!

Energy Star is a joint program run by the E.P.A. and the U.S. Dept. of Energy to help save money and energy!  Visit their website to find out what products and appliances are the most environmentally friendly: http://www.energystar.gov
Green school supplies:
Green your entire desk!  Pens, pencils, glue sticks, notecards- all the typical school supplies have a “green” equivalent.  Buy them to have the most sustainable desk on your floor!

Green Bedding:
Natural, organic materials make the best bedding.  Stick to 100% cotton and avoid synthetic fabrics.  Use it for your sheets, pillowcases, towels, and clothing!
