What it is NOT
Clinical depression is not the occasional down or blue feelings that
everyone has from time to time. It is not temporarily feeling bad about
a breakup or another loss although those feelings can lead to depression.
What it IS
Depression is a whole body illness, involving body, mood and thought.
It affects one's appetite, sleep, energy level, self worth, and perception
of the world.
Symptoms of Depression
Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
Feelings worthlessness, and helplessness
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
Appetite and/or sleep disturbance
Fatigue
Thoughts of death, suicide or suicide attempts
Decreased concentration and ability to focus
Depression is NOT a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can
be wished or willed away. People with depressive illness cannot merely
"pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment,
symptoms can last for weeks, months or years! Because depression often
lowers academic and interpersonal functioning, problems tend to be compounded
and depression worsens. Timely treatment can shorten the duration of
symptoms and cut off the "downward spiral" of depression.
If you or any of your friends are struggling with these symptoms of
depression, please call 977-2323 to schedule an appointment with one
