SGA Executive Board "Lives the Mission" at National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference
Members of Saint Louis University's Student Government Association Executive Board traveled to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., July 25-29 for the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC).
The conference, entitled "Live the Mission," was an opportunity for student delegates from 26 of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities to develop their leadership skills, network with other involved students and collaborate ideas to further the Jesuit mission.
Over four days the SLU delegates attended sessions on management, conflict resolution, innovative methods for tackling social justice issues on college campuses, various presentations on marginalized populations and the skills to assist such populations, and increasing student involvement on campus.
The sessions were led by members of the College of Holy Cross community or student leaders from the other Jesuit institutions. Each day of the conference was split into subthemes of Who am I?, "Who do I want to become? and Who shall I be for others?
The conference also featured keynote addresses from impressive leaders within the university and Jesuit networks, including Sivagami Subbaraman, director of the LGBTQ Resource Center at Georgetown University, and renowned commentator, author and former SLU commencement speaker Fr. James Martin, S.J.,
As part of the conference's theme, "Live the Mission," the final day involved participating in service projects around the Worcester area. The projects ranged from cleaning the city's canal systems, harvesting fresh produce for the area food bank, spending time with elderly veterans and facilitating a free book fair for the Worcester youth.
The SGA Executive Board said they, as student leaders of the SLU community, were very fortunate and thankful to have had the opportunity to attend NJSLC."
The Board plans to incorporate the skills learned at the conference into all the initiatives they have planned for the academic year.
Santa Clara University will host the 17th annual NJSLC in 2013.
