As members of the Saint Louis University community, SLUCare's employees demonstrate conduct and performance consistent with SLU's mission - the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for the service of humanity. In accord with our mission statement as a Jesuit, Catholic institution, SLUCare strives to be "catholic" or "universal" in recognizing the values we share with all traditions and persons of good will.

In our aspirations to realize the University's mission, we celebrate a shared set of values that support the common good. We refer to these values as the "5Cs": competence, conscience, compassion, commitment and community. The "5Cs" are among the values that capture the spirit and motivation of all who work, teach, learn and serve the needs of those who come to SLUCare for health care. They provide the foundation for our Guiding Principles as well as support the Catholic mission enunciated in the Ethical and Religious Directives of Catholic Health Care and the Jesuit tradition.

Competence
A high level of competence is expected from every faculty member, physician-in-training, staff member, volunteer and student and will be supported and fostered at all levels. Collaboratively, we will:

  • Strive for and encourage excellence and intellectual development of our colleagues
  • Expect integrity and professionalism from our colleagues
  • Expect our colleagues to provide quality patient care and treatment of the whole person by striving to meet the physical, spiritual, psychological and emotional needs of patients and families
  • Expect all colleagues and programs to support and develop spirituality in and through education, medicine, research and administration

Conscience
We support and encourage morality beyond legality, truth beyond data. Based on our commitment to ethical practices in every facet of the organization, it is the responsibility of each individual to:

  • Demonstrate conscience through honesty, integrity and morality in every situation and practice
  • Ask for forgiveness when appropriate and take initiative to solve problems and support one another in difficult times
  • Advocate for individual concerns of patients and families
  • Strive for equitable and balanced policies/practices relative to race, gender, religion, benefits and compensation
  • Cultivate the formation of one's conscience, which honors the dignity of the whole person

Compassion
We are committed to carry out patient care, healing and education. We seek collaboratively to:

  • Promote and encourage the healing process of the whole person
  • Encourage self-determination by inviting patients and families to take an active part in their own health care decisions
  • Respect the confidentiality of patients, families and co-workers
  • Demonstrate communication skills by listening, seeking first to understand
  • Demonstrate patience, compassion, respect and selflessness in dealing with others

Community
In support of the values and principles enunciated in the Catholic mission, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care and the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to promote service to the community. Drawn to this covenant, we seek to:

  • Utilize institutional resources wisely to sustain our mission in the community through partnership with public health programs
  • Foster and support charitable medical work and advocate for access to health care
  • Encourage programs that allow faculty, physicians-in-training, staff, volunteers and students to pursue community dialogue that addresses injustice, poverty, racism, educational needs and the general health of the public
  • Teach and promote environmental responsibilities and efficiencies that enhance quality of life in the community
  • Value staff as our primary resource to be treated fairly and respectfully in order to foster a caring and dedicated community of health care workers

Commitment
In a spirit of collaboration, we daily commit to living out these guiding principles both corporately and individually. When we fail to live out these principles, we will strive to find equitable solutions. By embracing these principles, we will embody our mission of manifesting God's glory and contributing to the health of God's people.
