Saint Louis University Moves West
When St. Louis College opened in 1829 under Jesuit sponsorship, it had moved from its original location near the riverfront to a new site at Washington Avenue and Ninth Street, approximately one mile to the northwest. At the time, this area was on the outskirts of the city of St. Louis, at the edge of the wilderness. (Today, this location is the site of the St. Louis Convention Center, adjacent to the TWA Dome.) The University’s entire "plant" consisted of a single brick building situated slightly west of Ninth Street and facing south towards Washington Avenue.
