Father William Banks Rogers, S.J.,
The Second Founder of Saint Louis University

Throughout its history, Saint Louis University has been blessed with leaders of extraordinary vision. They have enabled the University to be innovative and new while remaining true to its core values rooted in Catholic and Jesuit tradition. As the 19th century came to a close and the 20th century began, these dynamic leaders continued to come forward to move the University into the future.

Williams Bank Rogers, S.J., 18th president

While the attention of much of the world was focused on the spectacular exhibits and activities of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expedition (the World’s Fair) in St. Louis, equally spectacular events were occurring a few miles to the east at Saint Louis University. Father William Banks Rogers, S.J. had became the new president of the University in 1900. During his eight year presidency, Father Rogers basically restructured the old "collegiate" system that had been in place from the beginning of the school, bringing Saint Louis University into line with American academic developments and enlarging its scope and vision. It can be said that he truly rebuilt Saint Louis University--hence his title, "The Second Founder."
