Saint Louis University

Applying for financial aid seems like a daunting process. In fact, it is actually very simple! Please check out our helpful hints and the instructions provided here.

1. Getting Started

To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need to:

  • Gather your and your parent's 2015 tax information. It is good to file the FAFSA based on a completed tax return, but it is far better to file the FAFSA early with estimates rather than later with exact figures. If you won't have your taxes done by early February, estimate.
  • Apply for a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID online. This will serve as your electronic signature on your FAFSA application.
  • Have your parent apply for a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID online. This will serve as your parent's electronic signature on your FAFSA application.

2. Ready to Submit the FAFSA

The FAFSA is available online.

  • File your FAFSA between January 1 - March 1 in order to receive the most consideration for all types of financial aid. Remember that funds are a limited resource, so FAFSAs received March 1 or later may result in a reduced financial aid package.
  • Complete all sections about you, your school plans, and financial information. List Saint Louis University as a destination for your results (our school code is 002506).
  • Sign with your electronic signature (FSA ID). Don't forget to have your parent sign with the FSA ID as well or your FAFSA will be rejected.
  • Submit your FAFSA.
  • Print out and keep a copy of your submitted information for your records.

3. After You File Your FAFSA

Here is what to expect after you file the FAFSA:

  • You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Check it for accuracy and follow up on any requests for additional information.
  • Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) will be calculated from information you provided on the FAFSA and will be listed on your SAR. The EFC is the amount your family is expected to contribute toward your education for the upcoming year.
  • If you have special or extraordinary circumstances go to our forms section at the office of student financial services or go to our contact webpage.
  • Your financial aid award will be mailed or emailed to you. Read and follow all instructions.
