University Health Plan and Billing Procedures

University Health Plan (UHP)

Saint Louis University requires all full-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students to have basic health insurance.  Please see instructions to waive or enroll through Aetna online for assistance with the new process or call Aetna Customer Service at 1-877-381-3544.

  • If a student already has other (non-University Health Plan) health insurance coverage in effect, then coverage under the (UHP) may be waived by submitting a waiver request online through Aetna Student Health. Students should have their insurance information available when they submit requests as they will be asked detailed information about their coverage.

  • Full-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students that do not waive UHP coverage and have not enrolled in UHP online will be automatically charged for UHP covering all semesters and/or terms in which they are registered and must enroll in the UHP online at Aetna Student Health.
  • The deadline to waive or enroll in the UHP is September 30 for the fall term or February 14 for the spring term. Any full-time students who have not waived by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in the UHP. If you have missed the deadline to waive and are automatically enrolled in the plan, you can still waive by submitting a late waiver form with a copy front and back of your insurance card. Full refunds may not be given after the auto-enrollment; you will be assessed a late waiver fee of $50 in most cases. You may fax forms to 314-977-7165, email to, or drop by Student Health Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
  • You must be registered in classes as a full-time student for Aetna's system to recognize you.  Please allow two (2) business days from registering full time to attempt to waive or enroll.  Please also make sure to use your full nine (9) digit banner ID (including the leading 000) when utilizing Aetna's site.
  • If you waive in the fall term, you will not need to waive again for the spring.  You only need to waive once per academic year but do have to waive each academic year that you attend full time.
  • Students do not have to waive for summer, but if you wish to enroll the deadline for the summer term is June 30.
  • Full-time students can remain on the plan through the summer if they are full time in the spring and will be again in the fall, though it is not required by the university at this time.
  • Part-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students are strongly encouraged to have health insurance coverage, but it is not a requirement of the university.  Visit Aetna Student Health for a list of eligible groups or call 314-977-7168 to find out if you may be eligible to voluntarily enroll in the University Health Plan.
  • Students who have been awarded graduate assistantships including support for UHP enrollment will also enroll online through Aetna Student Health.  See Frequently Asked Questions relating to the enrollment or waiver process for graduate assistants.
  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: please reference this short presentation that includes instructions and screenshots of Aetna's site with additional information you may find helpful.

Student Health Center Insurance Billing Procedures

  • You do not need to have the University Health Plan to be seen at Student Health.  Please see this information on steps to take to make sure your plan will cover you while you are here. The SLUCare website has a list of all plans they have a contract with.  All of our physicians are in the SLUCare network.
  • You are responsible for paying any co-payments, co-insurance or deductibles outlined by your insurance policy.

  • Co-payments and payment for medication received at Student Health Center are paid at the time of service. All other amounts owed will be billed to the student after the insurance is billed. The student can determine the best billing address at the time of service for us to keep in our billing system. Our billing system does not interface with banner, so the address you have with the university for your student account can be different than the address you give us for medical bills.  We do not bill for any of our services through Student Financial Services.
  • If laboratory testing is sent out, the billing for that laboratory service is billed through Quest or LabCorp.  Click here for more information on our laboratory options.
  • Students should always bring their insurance card to appointments at the Student Health Center, even if they have the University Health Plan. This will insure proper and timely billing for received services.  It is important to always keep your insurance card with you at all times.
