1. What are the prizes?

The Essay Contest Winner will be awarded the free use of his/her Spring textbooks from Barnes and Noble College Bookstore, and an opportunity to attend dinner with the author of Little Princes, Conor Grennan.

3. I am a transfer student, can I enter?

Yes, the contest is open to all first-year students - freshmen and transfer students.

4. Can students from any school and major enter?

The contest is open to all first-year undergraduate students, regardless of their academic focus.

Sorry, the contest is open to undergraduate first-year students only.

6. What criteria will be used in judging the entries?

The judging committee will use the following guidelines to review the essay submissions:

  • Maintain a clear purpose throughout the entire essay
  • Express a unique perspective
  • Contain a strong, central thesis
  • Use relevant, detailed evidence from the book
  • Show pages numbers for textual references
  • Demonstrate effective paragraphing (coherence and unity among paragraphs)
  • Contain correct grammar and punctuation
  • 750 - 1000 words

7. Who is judging my essay submission?

There is a judging committee that will be reviewing each essay submission.

8. How many entries can I submit?

Each person may submit only one essay.

9. Can I enter something I wrote for a class?

Yes, as long as it follows the criteria for entry.

The winning essays will be published on the First-Year Summer Reading Program website.
