Students Design Affordable Technology for Farmers. SLU's Remote Sensing Lab, led by Abudwasiti Wulamu, Ph.D., used recently awarded grants to design an Unmanned Aerial System to be used to collect remote sensing data for agriculture, disaster management, and climate change effects. 

Geographic Information Science

SLU's Center for Sustainability to offer new GIScience degree. SLU will begin offering the M.S. in GIScience—the only on-campus degree of its kind in the region—in fall 2015. This program adds to the center's existing M.S. in Sustainability, M.S. in Urban Planning and Development, and Graduate Certificate in Advanced Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

AASHE STARS Silver Rating

SLU Receives AASHE STARS® Silver Rating. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) oversees STARS, the most widely recognized framework for publicly reporting information related to campus sustainability. SLU is a charter participant and earned a Bronze Rating in 2011.

SLU Brings Solar Power to Campus. SLU has begun installing on six campus buildings solar arrays capable of generating more than 180,000 kilowatt hours of clean energy annually. That's enough clean energy to power a dozen homes for a year, while reducing the equivalent of 124 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

SLU Greenhouse Gas Report

SLU Releases First Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report. SLU is proud to announce the completion of the first-ever greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and report. A GHG inventory is a comprehensive analysis of all emissions created from energy used by an institution. This GHG inventory will serve as a baseline for future inventory reviews and be a tool for SLU to track all future GHG use.

SLU Tree Campus

SLU Listed as a Tree Campus USA. SLU has been designated as an official Tree Campus USA for the second year in a row. SLU's program includes five aspects required for certification: a tree campus advisory team, a tree care plan, dedicated annual expenditures, observance of Arbor Day, and a service learning project.
