Welcome! I am most pleased that you are considering joining the faculty at Saint Louis University.
As an English professor, author, long-time editor of a prominent academic journal, dean and now the University Provost, I have dedicated my career to teaching, research and service. For me, Saint Louis University is a perfect fit because SLU deeply values all three of these fundamental academic endeavors. Instructional and research excellence are viewed as necessary complements to one another, not two paths to choose between. And our Jesuit tradition asks us to be "men and women for and with others" - people committed to service and community building.
Commitments to social justice and to free intellectual inquiry are also hallmarks of the Jesuit tradition. At SLU, faculty, staff and students of diverse faith traditions, backgrounds and ethnicities create and participate actively in a learning environment "where knowledge touches lives."
While our roots connect us firmly to the social teachings of the Catholic Church, we are also catholic - i.e., inclusive and expansive - in our educational undertakings.
Saint Louis University offers something rare in higher education: the opportunity to teach at a research-extensive university where academic achievement and scientific advancements unite with community commitment and Jesuit values.
We welcome to our faculty persons willing to take risks, discover and evolve. We hope that these aspirations resonate with you and that, like me, you will find Saint Louis University to be a perfect fit for you.
Joe Weixlmann, Ph.D.
