67 x 49 inches (170.2 x 124.5 cm) |
Acquisition: Gift of the Baroness Elizabeth La Candele De Ghyseghan, nee de
Rabiano, the mother of Theodore De Theux, S.J., one of the early Belgian Fathers at Saint Louis
University. His brother was Prime Minister of Belgium. |
This painting was commissioned by Jean Micault of a Bourgundian family that settled in
Mechlin (Malines) in the Netherlands in the fifteenth century. His Coat of Arms appears in the
tree and his portrait in the richly costumed figures standing on the left. Numerous figures
fill the canvas creating a feeling of movement. In the foreground, Christ is nailed to the
cross.
